The JBL Xtreme 4 Black is JBL’s large shoulder-strap Bluetooth speaker in its most understated finish: two 70 mm woofers and two 20 mm tweeters inside an IP67 body, up to 24 hours of music with up to 6 more from Playtime Boost, a built-in powerbank and a battery you can swap out yourself. It is the generation before the Xtreme 5, and everything below comes from what JBL publishes for the JBL Xtreme 4 itself.

JBL Xtreme 4 Black: the finish and who picks it
Black is the colour most buyers of the JBL Xtreme 4 end up with, and for practical reasons. The fabric grille and rubber end caps hide sand, sunscreen smudges and scuffs from a car boot far better than lighter shades, and a black speaker sits quietly on a living-room shelf between beach trips. The orange JBL badge is the only bright accent.
The same speaker is sold in two other finishes: see the JBL Xtreme 4 Blue and the JBL Xtreme 4 Camo. The hardware inside is identical across all three; only the colour of the fabric and trim changes.
How the JBL Xtreme 4 produces its sound
Inside are two 70 mm woofers and two 20 mm tweeters. JBL rates the output differently depending on the power source, and the difference is worth knowing. Plugged into the adaptor (AC mode), the woofers get 2 x 30 W RMS and the tweeters 2 x 20 W RMS. Running on battery, that drops to 2 x 20 W RMS for the woofers and 2 x 15 W RMS for the tweeters. In other words, the speaker has more headroom when it is connected to power.
JBL quotes a frequency response of 44 Hz to 20 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio above 80 dB. AI Sound Boost analyses the incoming signal in real time; JBL says it drives the speakers harder while reducing distortion at high volume and adding bass. The JBL Portable app adds EQ presets, a customisable equaliser for highs, mids and lows, and firmware updates.
JBL Xtreme 4 battery life, fast charge and the replaceable pack
JBL rates the JBL Xtreme 4 at up to 24 hours of music per charge, and states that the figure depends on volume level and audio content. Playtime Boost can add up to 6 more hours by retuning the sound, so treat it as an extension mode for the end of a long day rather than the everyday listening profile.
The battery is a 68 Wh lithium-ion polymer pack (7.2 V / 9,444 mAh). JBL quotes a full charge in 3.5 hours with a 20 V / 3 A input, and says ten minutes on the charger adds about two hours of music. The pack is replaceable, so a worn battery years from now means a new pack rather than a new speaker. The spare is sold separately; we stock the JBL Battery 400, which fits the Xtreme 4.
Powerbank output, adaptor and power input
The USB-C port also works as a powerbank output. JBL specifies 5 V/3 A, 9 V/2 A and 11 V/2 A charge-out, enough to top up a phone during a day at the beach. For charging the speaker, it accepts 5, 9, 12, 15 or 20 V at 3 A over USB-C.
A USB-C PD adaptor is in the box, with the plug type varying by region. JBL’s spec sheet does not print the adaptor’s mains input range, so check the rating label on the adaptor before travelling with it. The 3.5-hour charge time is quoted for a 20 V / 3 A source; a low-power phone charger or laptop port is not covered by that figure.
IP67, heat and life outdoors in the UAE
IP67 means the JBL Xtreme 4 is dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water, so sand, pool splashes and a slip into shallow water are all within its rating. It comes with a shoulder strap that can also be worn crossbody, has a built-in bottle opener, and is made in part with recycled materials.
The figure that matters most in a Gulf summer is JBL’s maximum operating temperature: 45 °C. A car parked in the sun, or a speaker left on exposed sand at midday in July, can pass that easily. Keep it in the shade and never leave it in a closed car; the IP67 rating protects against water and dust, not heat.
Auracast, PartyBoost and the newer Xtreme 5
The JBL Xtreme 4 links to other speakers through Auracast, JBL’s newer multi-speaker connection, and JBL says it can also connect with PartyBoost-enabled speakers, which matters if you already own an older JBL model. Bluetooth is version 5.3 with the A2DP 1.3 and AVRCP 1.6 profiles.
The Xtreme 5 is the next generation in this line and a different product with its own specifications. If you are choosing between the two, compare them side by side with our JBL Xtreme 5 Black page rather than assuming figures carry over from one to the other.
Who This Is Not For
At 2.1 kg, the JBL Xtreme 4 is a shoulder-strap speaker, not a pocket one; for hiking, cycling or a gym bag, a smaller speaker is far easier to carry. JBL’s specification lists no 3.5 mm audio input, so a device without Bluetooth cannot be wired in.
The loudest performance needs the adaptor nearby, because battery-mode output is rated lower than AC-mode output. The 45 °C operating limit rules out leaving it in a parked car or in direct midday sun. And if you want the newest features JBL offers at this size, the Xtreme 5 is the later model.

FAQ
Is the JBL Xtreme 4 waterproof?
Yes. It is rated IP67: dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water. The rating does not cover heat, and JBL’s maximum operating temperature is 45 °C.
How long does the JBL Xtreme 4 battery last?
Up to 24 hours per charge by JBL’s rating, depending on volume level and audio content, plus up to 6 hours more with Playtime Boost.
Can I replace the JBL Xtreme 4 battery?
Yes. The battery is replaceable and the spare is sold separately; the JBL Battery 400 fits the Xtreme 4.
Is it quieter on battery than on the adaptor?
Yes. JBL rates the woofers at 2 x 30 W RMS in AC mode and 2 x 20 W RMS on battery, with the tweeters at 2 x 20 W RMS and 2 x 15 W RMS respectively.
Can the JBL Xtreme 4 connect to my older JBL speaker?
Yes, if that speaker supports PartyBoost; JBL says the Xtreme 4 connects with PartyBoost-enabled speakers as well as over Auracast.
Can I leave it in the car?
No. JBL lists 45 °C as the maximum operating temperature, and a parked car in the UAE regularly gets hotter than that.
Is the Black model different from the Blue or Camo?
No. All three share the same hardware and specifications; only the finish changes.
