Why the blue
Blue is the colour for buyers who want the JBL Xtreme 4 to be part of the scene rather than hide in it. It looks at home by a pool, on a boat deck or on a beach towel, and it is easy to spot in a crowded majlis garden or a busy campsite. The bright fabric does show sand and dark marks a little more than black, but because the speaker is IP67 you can rinse the JBL Xtreme 4 Blue under fresh water after a beach day and let it air-dry. How it produces its sound
JBL rates the output by power source, and the difference matters. The battery is a 68 Wh lithium-ion polymer pack (7.2 V / 9,444 mAh). A full charge takes about 3.5 hours at 20 V / 3 A, and 10 minutes on the charger gives around 2 hours of play. When the battery eventually ages, you can swap it yourself for a JBL Battery 400, sold separately, instead of replacing the whole JBL Xtreme 4 Blue.
Power bank and charging
The single USB-C port is both input and output. As a power bank it delivers 5 V / 3 A, 9 V / 2 A or 11 V / 2 A, enough to top up a phone from the JBL Xtreme 4 Blue during an afternoon outdoors. The shoulder strap can be worn crossbody, and the speaker is partly made from recycled materials. The one figure to respect in a UAE summer is the maximum operating temperature of 45 °C: a parked car or open sand at midday can exceed it, so keep the speaker in the shade.
Who This Is Not For
At 2.1 kg and nearly 30 cm long, the JBL Xtreme 4 Blue is a shoulder speaker, not one for a pocket or a cycling bag. JBL does not list a 3.5 mm audio input, so devices without Bluetooth cannot be plugged in. Full power on the JBL Xtreme 4 Blue needs the adapter connected, the 45 °C operating limit rules out leaving it in a parked car, and if you want JBL’s newest model in this size, that is the Xtreme 5.
