The light show
The body of the JBL Pulse 5 is a lit cylinder: the light show runs a full 360 degrees and moves in sync with the music. You choose and customise the light effects in the JBL Portable app, so the speaker can be a calm lamp on a balcony table one night and a party light the next.
JBL does not publish an LED count or a brightness figure for the light show, and we do not guess one. What JBL does make clear is that the lights are part of the design rather than an add-on, which is the reason to buy a Pulse over a plain speaker of the same size.
Sound: a woofer and a tweeter, with RMS figures
Inside the JBL Pulse 5 are two drivers: a 64 mm woofer and a 16 mm tweeter. JBL rates them at 30 W RMS and 10 W RMS respectively. These are RMS figures for continuous output, not peak numbers, and JBL does not publish a peak figure at all.
Frequency response is listed as 58 Hz to 20 kHz (axial, −6 dB) with a signal-to-noise ratio above 80 dB. In practice, the dedicated tweeter gives vocals and cymbals more room than a single full-range driver, while the woofer handles the low end for a garden or a majlis gathering.
Battery life and its conditions
The JBL Pulse 5 has a 27 Wh lithium-ion polymer battery (3.6 V, 7500 mAh). JBL rates playtime at up to 12 hours and adds that it depends on volume level and audio content. JBL does not publish separate figures with the light show on or off, so expect less than 12 hours at party volume with the lights running.
A full charge takes under 4 hours from a 5 V / 3 A USB-C source. Only a USB-C cable is in the box, so use a phone charger that can deliver 3 A to get the rated charging time.
IP67, weight and size
IP67 means the JBL Pulse 5 is dustproof and waterproof, which covers pool-side splashes, sand on a beach day and rain. The body measures 107 × 214 × 131 mm and weighs 1.47 kg, so it is a speaker you carry to a spot and set down rather than clip to a bag.

JBL Pulse 5 or Pulse 4?
The JBL Pulse 4 is the previous generation, and the two are different speakers. The Pulse 4 has a single 2.25-inch driver at 20 W RMS, Bluetooth 4.2 and IPX7 (water only), and it weighs 1.26 kg. The JBL Pulse 5 adds a separate tweeter, 40 W RMS in total, Bluetooth 5.3, dust protection with IP67 and a slightly bigger 27 Wh battery, at the cost of an extra 210 g. Both are rated at up to 12 hours.
Who This Is Not For
At 1.47 kg, the JBL Pulse 5 is heavy for hiking or cycling. JBL lists no speakerphone and no wired audio input, so it works over Bluetooth only. There is no charger in the box. And if you mainly want loud outdoor sound and do not care about the lights, a non-light JBL speaker of the same price usually gives more volume per dirham.
