Concrete Genie PS4 hands you a paintbrush instead of a gun. Developed by PixelOpus and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, it follows Ash, a bullied teenager who discovers that the drawings in his notebook come alive when he paints them on the walls of Denska — a dying seaside town that has been slowly swallowed by pollution and darkness.

Denska, Ash and a Town Losing Its Colour

On the Concrete Genie, denska was built from two real influences: small Chinese fishing villages and the industrial edges of Bristol in England. The result is a place with genuine character — narrow alleys, rusting piers, shuttered shopfronts — rather than a generic backdrop. It used to be alive. Now it is grey, half-abandoned, and the only people still hanging around are the group of kids who make Ash miserable.

On the Concrete Genie, the story opens with those bullies tearing up his sketchbook and scattering the pages across the town. Recovering them is your first goal, but the game is really about something quieter: PixelOpus built the whole narrative around bullying and street art as themes, and it treats both with more nuance than the bright art style suggests. There is real sadness under the colour.

Concrete Genie PS4 Painting: Your Controller Is the Brush

The painting system in Concrete Genie PS4 uses the motion sensor inside the DualShock 4. You tilt and sweep the controller itself to drag light across a wall, and murals bloom out of the darkness in real time. It feels far more physical than pushing a cursor with a stick, and it is the reason the game left an impression on people who played it back in 2019.

On the Concrete Genie, you unlock new brush designs as you progress — trees, flowers, stars, weather, creatures — and you are free to arrange them however you want. Notably, PixelOpus deliberately refused to score or grade your artwork anywhere in the game. There is no rating system, because the team did not want to sit in judgement over what players made.

Genies With Personalities You Design

On the Concrete Genie, genies are the heart of it. You draw one on a wall, choose its body, horns, eyes and tail, and it steps off the surface as a living creature that follows you around town. The colour you pick is not cosmetic: paint a genie red and it breathes fire, and each elemental type opens paths and solves obstacles the others cannot.

On the Concrete Genie, because you design their look yourself, the genies you travel with are unique to your playthrough. They react to what you paint nearby, sulk when ignored, and light up when you give them something they like. A free Brush Pack update added even more designs after launch.

Two PlayStation VR Modes Included Free

On the Concrete Genie, sony bundled two separate PlayStation VR experiences into the package at no extra charge. The first is a short story mode starring Splotch, the genie who rides on Ash’s backpack, played with two PlayStation Move controllers in a grey cave you gradually bring to life. The second is Free Paint, an open sandbox with the full toolset and no objectives at all. Both are optional — the main campaign plays normally on a standard TV with a DualShock 4.

The Last Game PixelOpus Ever Made

Concrete Genie was the second and final release from PixelOpus, the small Sony first-party studio that debuted with Entwined in 2014. The studio closed in June 2023, which gives this one a particular weight for PlayStation collectors. It earned generally favourable reviews at launch, with praise aimed squarely at the visuals, the painting mechanic and the story. Do I need PlayStation VR to play?

No. The full story campaign is played on a normal screen with a DualShock 4. The two VR modes are extra content included in the same package for owners who have the headset and Move controllers.

Is the game suitable for children?

On the Concrete Genie, it is rated PEGI 12 and carries no gore, but the story deals directly with bullying and isolation. Younger players usually enjoy the painting; the themes are worth a parent knowing about in advance.

How long is the campaign?
