The countryside is full of places to search: cult-controlled ruins, caves and nuclear bunkers sit under a green and pleasant surface. Combat with a cricket bat and a steady heart

Combat in Atomfall PS5 mixes marksmanship with melee. Because ammunition is limited, close-range fighting with weapons such as a cricket bat is a regular part of the game. Rebellion adds a heart-rate system: as your heart rate climbs, your aim gets less steady, and you need to manage it to shoot accurately and keep enough energy for melee attacks. It is a small system with a big effect, making fights feel tense and physical. Stealth is often the better choice, especially early on when your kit is light.

A very British setting

Atomfall PS5 takes place in a fictional version of northern England, with eccentric characters, mysticism, cults and rogue government agencies. PlayStation describes a blend of science fiction, folk horror and Cold War influences. The result looks very different from the brown wastelands of most post-apocalyptic games: rolling green hills, stone villages and quiet woodland, with something clearly wrong underneath.
