Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 is a reboot, not a sequel. After Mortal Kombat 11 collapsed the timeline, Fire God Liu Kang rebuilt the universe from scratch, and NetherRealm Studios used that as licence to reintroduce every familiar fighter with a new history. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are brothers now. Mileena is heir to the throne. Nothing you know is quite where you left it.

A New Era Built by Liu Kang
The premise is elegant. Liu Kang, now a god, has the power to design reality, and he built a peaceful world where old enemies never became enemies. That peace does not hold, obviously, but it lets the writers give beloved characters completely different motivations without erasing what came before — the old timeline still happened, it just no longer applies.
Ed Boon, who co-created Mortal Kombat in 1992, directed. This is the twelfth main entry in the series and its second full reboot after 2011.
Kameo Fighters: The Big Mechanical Change
Alongside your main fighter you select a Kameo, a partner character summoned mid-combo to extend pressure, break an opponent’s momentum, or finish a sequence you could not finish alone. It works in the tradition of assist characters from tag fighters, but the Kameo roster is drawn deliberately from the series’ own history — Sonya Blade, Kano, Goro, Stryker, Jax, Kung Lao and more.
The practical effect is that your character choice is really two choices, and the combinations multiply what any single fighter can do. Learning good Kameo pairings is where most of the depth in this game lives.
Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 Story Mode
NetherRealm has produced the best story modes in the fighting genre for over a decade, and this continues it: a cinematic campaign split into chapters, each putting you behind a different Kombatant, cutting between playable fights and long-form cutscenes. You do not need any prior knowledge of the series to follow it, which is the advantage of a reboot.
Rollback Netcode and Online Play
The game shipped with rollback netcode, which is the single most important technical feature a modern fighting game can have — it hides latency so online matches feel closer to local play. Combined with online ranked and casual modes and regular DLC fighters including guest characters from film and television, the competitive scene has stayed active well beyond launch.
Warner Bros. published the full launch details in their official Mortal Kombat 1 announcement.
Fatalities and Why This Is an 18
Mortal Kombat has always sold on its finishing moves, and this entry pushes the detail further than any before it, taking advantage of PlayStation 5 hardware to render them in uncomfortable clarity. The game is rated PEGI 18 and that rating is entirely justified. It is not a title to buy for a child.
