Paint your world to life
The core idea of Concrete Genie PS4 is painting. Sony describes using the motion sensor function of the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller to paint colourful landscapes across Denska: you move the controller and the brush follows. At the start your toolset is small, and you expand it by finding the scattered pages of Ash’s favourite sketchbook. Each new page adds shapes and elements you can paint, so the town gradually fills with your own designs. There is no single correct way to decorate a wall, which is what makes the game feel personal.
Genies that come to life
The second pillar of Concrete Genie PS4 is the Genies. You design them on the walls, and once painted they come alive and accompany you. Sony explains that each Genie has magical elemental powers that help you overcome puzzles and see off your adversaries, and that as your connection with each Genie grows, they work alongside you to open up new areas of Denska and unlock new abilities for Ash. The game carries a fantasy violence descriptor, but the tone is gentle: the story deals with bullying and loneliness through art rather than through combat.
Two PlayStation VR modes
Concrete Genie PS4 includes two special PlayStation VR modes on the same disc. In VR Experience mode you go on a quest with a small Genie called Splotch, and your painting helps unlock a mysterious power. Completing it unlocks VR Free Paint mode, where you use two PlayStation Move motion controllers to paint living landscapes in four Denska locations. Sony notes that PlayStation VR and PlayStation Camera are required for these features, that PS VR is not for use by children under 12, and that VR games may cause motion sickness for some players.
Playing on PS5
Concrete Genie PS4 is a PlayStation 4 game, but Sony states that it is playable on PS5 through backward compatibility, after updating the console to the latest system software. Sony also warns that some features available on PS4 may be absent on PS5. The main game is played with a controller and works without VR, so the VR modes are a bonus rather than a requirement. The Concrete Genie PS4 disc is single-player only.
