Atomic Heart PS5 is a first-person action RPG developed by Mundfish and published by Focus Entertainment, released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on 21 February 2023. It is set in an alternate history of the 1950s USSR, a retro-futuristic utopia where technology has advanced far beyond our own. Then a global system failure at Facility 3826 turns the machines against the people who built them. You are Major P-3, sent in to contain the accident and stop classified information from leaking. Expect a mix of shooting, melee combat and glove-powered abilities against robots and mutant creatures.

The story of Facility 3826
PlayStation describes the world of Atomic Heart PS5 as a place of wonder and perfection that turns out to be a deceiving glitter hiding dark secrets deep within Facility 3826. The unstoppable course of technology has produced terrifying machines and mutant creatures, and all of them suddenly rebel against their creators. As Major P-3 you meet characters such as the robotic ballerina Twins, the enigmatic Granny Zina and the AI repair cabinet NORA while you investigate what went wrong. The tone combines bright Soviet-style retro-futurism with violent combat, which is why the game carries a PEGI 18 rating for extreme violence and strong language.

Weapons and how to upgrade them
According to the PlayStation Blog, you gain access to 12 types of weapons as you progress, including melee weapons, firearms and energy weapons. Melee attacks charge your energy weapon, so you can keep fighting even when you run out of ammunition. Weapons are upgraded with recipes at NORA crafting machines, and upgrades unlock special attacks: the energy weapon can release an EMP pulse, and the PM pistol can spend 4 bullets on a powerful sniper shot. Elemental cartridges add fire or freezing effects. NORA rooms are also where you save progress and store items, so managing inventory is part of how Atomic Heart PS5 plays.

The polymer glove CHAR-les
The key tool in Atomic Heart PS5 is P-3’s polymer glove, CHAR-les. It has 5 abilities: Shocker, Telekinesis, Frostbite, Polymeric Shield and Polymeric Jet. Shocker is always available, and you can activate 2 of the other 4 at the same time, changing the set whenever a fight needs a different approach. There are 7 skill branches in total, 5 for the glove abilities and 2 passive ones for character skills and energy, and you can reset all skills free of charge at any time to try a new build. Consumables such as condensed milk for extra damage and first-aid capsules for health round out the system.
