The Lands Between

You are Tarnished, exiled and returned, drawn back to a realm where the Elden Ring has been shattered and demigods hold its shards. The story is delivered the way FromSoftware always delivers it — in item descriptions, environmental detail and brief, cryptic conversations rather than exposition. Martin’s contribution was the mythology underneath: the gods, the bloodlines and the events that broke everything long before you arrived.

The result is a world that feels genuinely ancient. Nothing explains itself, and piecing the history together from fragments is a large part of why people are still discussing it years later.

What Changed When FromSoftware Went Open World

Previous Souls games funnelled you down a route. Here, if a boss is beating you, you can simply leave. Ride in another direction, find a catacomb, a dragon, a ruined fort, come back stronger. That single change made the studio’s design accessible to an enormous audience that had bounced off Dark Souls, without softening the combat at all.

Legacy dungeons — Stormveil Castle, Raya Lucaria, Leyndell — are the old FromSoftware level design intact, dense and interlocking, dropped into the open map as set pieces.

Elden Ring PS5 and the Difficulty Question

It is hard, and there is no difficulty slider. What there is instead is choice: summon spirit ashes to fight alongside you, call other players in for help, respec your character, or walk away and return twenty levels stronger. Players who found earlier Souls games impenetrable frequently finish this one, because the world gives you room to solve problems your own way.

Builds, Weapons and Torrent

Ten starting classes set your opening stats, and after that nothing is locked. Strength, dexterity, faith, intelligence and arcane builds are all viable, weapon arts can be swapped between armaments, and respeccing is available once you find the right item. Torrent, your spectral mount, makes traversal fast and turns several boss fights into mounted combat.

What Came After

The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion followed in June 2024, and Bandai Namco has since announced the Tarnished Edition bundling both together, plus a live-action adaptation written and directed by Alex Garland with A24, filmed for IMAX and scheduled for March 2028. FAQ – Elden Ring PS5

Do I need to have played Dark Souls?

No. Elden Ring is a standalone world with no story connection to any previous FromSoftware game. It is also the most approachable entry point the studio has made.

How long is it?

Fifty to sixty hours to reach an ending on a focused run. Thorough players regularly pass a hundred, and there are multiple endings and a full New Game Plus.

Does this include Shadow of the Erdtree?

No. This is the base game. The expansion is sold separately and requires the base game to play.

Can I play with friends?
