What the JBL Spinner BT Is
The JBL Spinner BT is a full-size record player built on a black-finished MDF plinth, driven by a DC belt-drive motor with an optical sensor that holds the platter at speed. Two speeds are supported: 33 1/3 rpm for albums and 45 rpm for singles and EPs. A cartridge is fitted at the factory, so the deck arrives ready to play rather than needing alignment before the first record.
What separates the JBL Spinner from a conventional turntable is the Bluetooth transmitter. Most decks assume you own an amplifier. This one assumes you might own nothing more than a wireless speaker, and gives you both routes out of the box.
Bluetooth 5.2, aptX HD, and What It Needs at the Other End
The wireless side runs Bluetooth 5.2 with Qualcomm aptX HD, using the A2DP 1.4 and AVRCP 1.6.2 profiles, on the 2.4 to 2.4835 GHz band at a maximum transmit power of under 2.0 dBm EIRP. The JBL Spinner transmits; it is a source, not a receiver, so it sends audio to a speaker or headphones rather than accepting audio from a phone.
One point deserves emphasis because it decides whether you get the quality you are paying for. aptX HD is a codec that both ends of the link have to support. If your speaker or headphones do not support aptX HD, the connection still works over Bluetooth 5.2, but not in that codec. JBL does not publish a wireless latency figure for this deck, so if you plan to watch anything in sync while listening, that is an unknown rather than a known.
Platter, Plinth and Tonearm
The JBL Spinner platter is die-cast aluminium rather than pressed steel or plastic, and the plinth underneath it is black-finished MDF. Both choices are about mass: a heavier platter carries speed more evenly, and a dense plinth keeps vibration from the motor and the room out of the stylus.
The tonearm on the JBL Spinner is aluminium and carries a removable headshell, an adjustable counterweight and adjustable anti-skate. Those three together are the difference between a deck you can set up properly and one you simply accept as it comes. The removable headshell is also what makes a later cartridge change a straightforward job.
The Cartridge JBL Fits
JBL fits an Audio-Technica AT3600L moving magnet cartridge to the JBL Spinner at the factory and lists the Audio-Technica ATN3600L as the replacement stylus. Knowing the replacement part number in advance matters, because a stylus is a wear item and this one is available separately rather than forcing a whole-cartridge purchase.
Because the cartridge is a standard moving magnet type on a removable headshell, the upgrade path is open. Nothing about the JBL Spinner locks you into the cartridge it ships with.
Wired Output and the Built-In Phono Stage
The JBL Spinner has one stereo RCA output pair, fed by a defeatable moving magnet phono stage. Defeatable is the important word: the built-in preamp lets you run straight into powered speakers or a line input today, and switching it off lets you feed a dedicated external phono stage later without the two fighting each other.
JBL rates the signal-to-noise ratio at greater than 65 dB. It does not publish a wow and flutter measurement for this turntable, which is the specification most often used to compare belt-drive decks, so there is no official figure to put against a competitor.
