The GIGABYTE X870 Eagle WIFI7 is an ATX motherboard on AMD’s X870 chipset for Socket AM5, supporting Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 processors. GIGABYTE builds it around a 14+2+2 phase digital VRM with 60A DrMOS, four DDR5 slots for up to 256 GB, a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot, three M.2 slots (one of them PCIe 5.0), two rear USB4 Type-C ports at up to 40Gb/s, Wi-Fi 7 and Realtek 2.5GbE. Eagle or Gaming X: where the GIGABYTE X870 Eagle WIFI7 differs

On paper the two boards share almost everything: the same X870 chipset, the same PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, the same three M.2 slots, two USB4 ports, Realtek 2.5GbE, Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth 5.4, four SATA ports and the same 30.5 x 24.4 cm ATX size. The difference is the power stage. The GIGABYTE X870 Eagle WIFI7 uses 14+2+2 phases in a 7+7 parallel design, while the Gaming X uses 16+2+2 in 8+8, both on 60A DrMOS. For an eight-core gaming processor such as a Ryzen 7 the Eagle has plenty of headroom. DDR5 support and what the OC speeds mean

The board has four DDR5 DIMM slots in dual channel, up to 256 GB in total with 64 GB per module, and reads both AMD EXPO and Intel XMP profiles. GIGABYTE lists 4400, 4800 and 5200 MT/s as standard speeds and everything from 5600 up to 8200 MT/s as overclocking. Reaching those higher figures depends on the processor’s memory controller, the kit and how many slots are filled, and GIGABYTE points buyers to its Memory Support List. On the GIGABYTE X870 Eagle WIFI7 a two-module 6000 MT/s EXPO kit is the sensible starting point for most AM5 builds; four modules generally run at lower speeds than two. Expansion slots and M.2 storage lanes

The main PCIEX16 slot runs PCIe 5.0 x16 with Ryzen 9000 and 7000. With Ryzen 8000 it drops to PCIe 4.0 x8 on Phoenix 1 chips and PCIe 4.0 x4 on Phoenix 2 chips. The two lower slots are full length but run PCIe 3.0 x1 from the chipset, fine for a sound card or capture card, not for a second graphics card. Storage starts with M2A_CPU, which runs PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 9000/7000. USB4, display outputs and the rear panel

The two rear USB4 Type-C ports reach up to 40Gb/s and carry DisplayPort for a processor with integrated graphics, up to 3840 x 2160 at 240 Hz. The HDMI 2.1 port supports up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz. GIGABYTE notes that video output depends on the processor. The rest of the back panel has one red USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, three USB 3.2 Gen 1, four USB 2.0, the RJ-45 port, three audio jacks, the antenna connectors and a Q-Flash Plus button. Inside, a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C header feeds a 20Gb/s front port on cases that have one, plus one USB 3.2 Gen 1 header and two USB 2.0 headers.

Wi-Fi 7, LAN and audio

Wired networking on the GIGABYTE X870 Eagle WIFI7 is Realtek 2.5GbE. Wireless is Wi-Fi 7 on 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz with 160 MHz channels and Bluetooth 5.4, and GIGABYTE lists two possible modules: MediaTek MT7925 on PCB revision 1.0 and Realtek RTL8922AE on revision 1.1. GIGABYTE states that Wi-Fi 7 features need a current Windows 11 release, that there is no Windows 10 driver, and that 6 GHz availability depends on local regulations. The antennas attach through WIFI EZ-Plug, a single combined connector. Audio is a Realtek HD codec with 2, 4, 5.1 and 7.1 channel output; GIGABYTE does not name the exact codec model on the specification page.

Cooling, power connectors and build features

GIGABYTE fits a fully covered one-piece MOSFET heatsink with multi-cut airflow channels and a 5 W/mK thermal pad, on a 6-layer PCB with 2X copper. CPU power comes through 8-pin and 4-pin ATX12V connectors. There are six fan headers (CPU, CPU/pump and four system), each rated up to 24W, plus three addressable RGB Gen2 headers and one RGB header. Assembly is helped by PCIe EZ-Latch Plus for one-click graphics card release, M.2 EZ-Latch Plus and EZ-Latch Click for screwless SSDs and heatsinks, and Q-Flash Plus, which updates the BIOS with no processor, memory or graphics card installed. Who This Is Not For

The GIGABYTE X870 Eagle WIFI7 is not the right board for a second graphics card or a fast add-in card, because the two extra slots are PCIe 3.0 x1. It is not ideal for three fast NVMe drives at full speed, since M2C_SB runs at x2 and pulls M2B_SB down to x2. Builders running a 16-core Ryzen 9 at sustained full load or overclocking hard should look at the 16+2+2 Gaming X instead of the GIGABYTE X870 Eagle WIFI7.
