The GIGABYTE B850M Eagle has three video outputs, and the pricier board in this range has one
This is the detail that decides the purchase for a lot of people and nobody prints it. The rear panel of the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle carries an HDMI 2.1 port rated at 4096×2160 at 60 Hz and two DisplayPort 1.4 connectors rated at 3840×2160 at 144 Hz. Three outputs.
The GIGABYTE B850M AORUS Elite WIFI6E ICE, which costs more, has one rear video output and it is DisplayPort. No rear HDMI at all.
If you are fitting a graphics card, none of this matters, because the card provides the outputs. If you are running a system on the processor integrated graphics, which is a normal thing to do for an office machine, a media box or a build waiting for a graphics card, the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle drives three monitors including an HDMI one straight from the board, and the more expensive option does not.
We are pointing at the cheaper board on purpose. If that is what fits your build, that is what you should buy.
The GIGABYTE B850M Eagle VRM: 8+2+2, and being honest about what that means
GIGABYTE publishes an 8+2+2 twin digital VRM: eight VCORE phases on 60A DrMOS in a 4+4 parallel design, two SOC phases also on 60A DrMOS, and two MISC phases.
Eight VCORE phases on 60A parts is a genuinely adequate VRM. It will run a Ryzen 7 9800X3D without complaint and it will run a Ryzen 9 in normal desktop and gaming use. What it is not is the 12-phase design on the AORUS board, and if your plan is a 16-core chip pinned at full load for hours at a time, or serious manual overclocking, that extra headroom is what you are paying for there.
Cooling is VRM Thermal Armor Advanced with a 5 W/mk thermal pad and an integrated IO shield, and GIGABYTE states up to 7 degrees lower temperature and four times the cooling surface of the previous design. The M.2 slots get Thermal Guard heatsinks.
The BIOS also carries X3D Turbo Mode, GIGABYTE profile for Ryzen X3D processors, and D5 Bionic Corsa for memory tuning. Neither changes the hardware, both are worth knowing exist on the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle if you own an X3D chip.
Storage on the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle: two M.2 slots, both wired to the processor
The GIGABYTE B850M Eagle has two M.2 slots. M2A_CPU runs PCIe 5.0 at x4 or x2 with Ryzen 9000 and 7000 processors, dropping to PCIe 4.0 on the 8000 series, and it takes 2280, 2580, 22110 and 25110 drives. M2B_CPU runs PCIe 4.0 at x4 or x2 and takes 2280 and 22110.
The important part is that both come off the processor. Neither is a chipset slot. On boards that advertise three M.2 slots, two of them are usually chipset slots sharing bandwidth with each other and with the USB controller, so the third slot is often slower in practice than it looks on paper. Two clean CPU lanes beats three contested ones for most builds.
SATA is four ports at 6Gb/s. That is the standard allowance across this whole range and it is the one place to count your drives before ordering.
Both M.2 heatsinks open with EZ-Latch Click and the drives themselves clip in with EZ-Latch Plus, so there are no screws in the storage path at all. The graphics card releases with PCIe EZ-Latch Plus. In a micro-ATX case where your hand does not fit behind the card, that last one matters more than it sounds.
Memory and expansion on the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle
Four DDR5 slots, up to 256 GB, with AMD EXPO and Intel XMP support. GIGABYTE publishes speeds up to 8200 MT/s and marks everything from 5600 upward as OC. Only 4400, 4800 and 5200 sit inside the JEDEC specification.
What that means in practice: a 6000 MT/s EXPO kit is the reliable choice on AM5 and the speed the platform was tuned around. Anything faster depends on the memory controller inside your individual processor, and no board vendor guarantees it. Four sticks also run slower than two, so 256 GB and top speed are not available together.
The graphics slot is PCIe 5.0 x16 with Ryzen 9000 and 7000. With an 8000 series chip it becomes PCIe 4.0 at x8 or x4 depending on the part, which is the processor limiting it rather than the board.
The second full-length slot on the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle runs PCIe 3.0 at x4. That is four lanes, not the single lane the larger ATX boards in this range give you, and it is roughly 3.9 GB/s. A 10GbE network card, a capture card or a PCIe 3.0 NVMe adapter all work properly there. It is one of the quiet advantages of the micro-ATX boards in this family.
USB, networking and audio on the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle
Rear USB on the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle is one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A in red, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A and four USB 2.0. Internal headers add a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C header, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 header and two USB 2.0 headers.
Be clear about the Type-C: it is USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps, not USB4 at 40. B850 does not require USB4 the way X870 does. Ten gigabits is enough to saturate most external SSDs and is not enough for a fast NVMe enclosure to run at full speed. If 40 Gbps is what you came for, an X870 board is the answer and this is not.
Networking is a Realtek 2.5GbE chip and Realtek Wi-Fi 6E RTL8852CE across 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz with Bluetooth 5.3. GIGABYTE lists the same wireless chip on both PCB revisions of the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle, so unlike some boards in this family there is no revision lottery here. WIFI EZ-Plug combines both antenna connectors into one plug.
Audio is a Realtek High Definition codec with 2, 4, 5.1 and 7.1 channel support. GIGABYTE does not publish a specific ALC part number for this board on either revision, so we are not going to print one.
Q-Flash Plus is fitted. It updates the BIOS with no processor, memory or graphics card installed, which on AM5 is what rescues a board that shipped before your chip existed.
GIGABYTE B850M Eagle or B850M AORUS Elite: which one to buy
Same chipset, same socket, same form factor, same two CPU-attached M.2 slots, same four SATA ports, same PCIe 3.0 x4 second slot, same Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5GbE. The boards are closer than the price gap suggests, so here is what actually separates them.
The AORUS Elite has a 12+2+2 VRM against 8+2+2 here, and on revision 1.1 it has the ALC1220 audio codec. Those are the two reasons to pay more.
The GIGABYTE B850M Eagle has three rear video outputs including HDMI, against one DisplayPort on the AORUS. It also has no revision lottery on the wireless chip or the audio codec, so what you order is what arrives.
Our honest read: if you are fitting a graphics card and running a Ryzen 9 hard, or you care about onboard audio, pay the difference. If you are building on integrated graphics, or running a Ryzen 5 or 7, or you want an HDMI monitor plugged straight into the board, the Eagle is the better buy and the cheaper one at the same time.
Who the GIGABYTE B850M Eagle is not for
Not for sustained all-core load on a 16-core Ryzen 9, or for serious manual overclocking. Eight VCORE phases is adequate, not generous, and the AORUS board has twelve.
Not for USB4 at 40 Gbps. The rear Type-C is 10 Gbps. X870 is where USB4 lives.
Not for Wi-Fi 7. This is Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3.
Not for three NVMe drives. Two M.2 slots and that is the limit.
Not for a large SATA array. The GIGABYTE B850M Eagle has four SATA ports.
Not for anyone who needs a named premium audio codec. GIGABYTE does not publish an ALC part number for this board, and we will not guess one.
Not for a full ATX case you wanted to fill. The GIGABYTE B850M Eagle is micro-ATX at 24.4 by 24.4 cm. It mounts in most ATX cases and leaves a large gap.
