Description

The MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi is a full-size ATX board on AMD Socket AM5, built on the AMD B850 chipset and aimed at a single powerful graphics card. Every figure here comes from MSI’s own specification page, including the parts MSI marks as overclocked rather than rated. Where the chipset and the board differ, that difference is spelled out, because they are not the same list.

What the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi Supports

MSI lists AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors on Socket AM5. Three generations on one socket is the main argument for the platform, since AM5 still has road ahead of it while AM4 does not.

Power delivery is what MSI calls a 12+2+1 Duet Rail Power System, fed by two 8-pin CPU connectors. Two connectors is not decoration on a board expected to hold a Ryzen 9 at a sustained all-core load: it spreads current across more pins and runs cooler. MSI adds MOSFET thermal pads rated at 7 W/mK and extra choke pads.

The MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi is ATX at 243.84 mm x 304.8 mm, and takes one ATX connector, the two CPU connectors, and an 8-pin PCIE_PWR connector that feeds extra current to the graphics slot.

DDR5 on the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi: Rated Versus Overclocked

This is the number most listings get wrong. MSI writes it as DDR5 8200 – 5600 (OC) MT/s and 5600 – 4800 (JEDEC) MT/s. The JEDEC range is the guaranteed speed. Everything above 5600 is an overclock reached through an AMD EXPO profile, and MSI labels it OC for that reason. No board maker guarantees an overclock.

The 8200 headline also depends on how you fill the slots, and MSI publishes that table. With a Ryzen 9000 chip, 8200+ MT/s applies to one single-rank module per channel only. Two modules per channel fall to 6400+ MT/s single-rank and 6000+ MT/s dual-rank, and a single dual-rank module per channel is listed at 6400+ MT/s. Filling all four slots costs memory speed on every AM5 board, not only this one.

There are four DDR5 UDIMM slots, a 256GB maximum and dual-channel operation. DDR4 does not work on AM5, so memory from an older build does not carry over.

PCIe Lanes and M.2 Storage on the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi

MSI lists four expansion slots: PCI_E1 at PCIe 5.0 x16, which MSI labels as coming from the CPU; PCI_E3 at PCIe 4.0 x4; and PCI_E2 and PCI_E4 at PCIe 3.0 x1 each. Only the first carries full graphics bandwidth, and MSI does not claim otherwise.

The three M.2 slots are not equal. M.2_1 is PCIe 5.0 x4 for 2280 and 2260 drives. M.2_2 is PCIe 4.0 x4 and is the one that accepts a long 22110 drive. M.2_3 is PCIe 4.0 x2 – half the lanes, so a fast Gen4 drive there will not reach the speed it would in M.2_2. MSI fits EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II heatsinks and screwless EZ M.2 Clip II retention.

MSI publishes the interface, not a drive speed. PCIe 5.0 x4 has roughly twice the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 x4, but the read and write figures belong to whichever SSD you install; no motherboard specification can promise them. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports handle older drives.

Networking, USB and Audio on the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi

Networking is the strongest part of the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi. MSI fits a Realtek 8126VB 5G LAN controller, which is 5 Gigabit Ethernet rather than the more common 2.5G, plus Wi-Fi 7 across 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz with 320MHz channels, quoted at up to 5.8Gbps. Both numbers need matching gear at the other end: a 5GbE switch for the wired port and a Wi-Fi 7 router with 6GHz for the wireless. On an ordinary 1G home line you will see neither. Bluetooth is 5.4.

The rear panel has 4x USB 2.0, 1x USB 5Gbps Type-A, 1x USB 10Gbps Type-A and 2x USB 10Gbps Type-C, with the 5G LAN port, Wi-Fi antenna connectors, audio jacks, S/PDIF-OUT, a Flash BIOS Button and a Clear CMOS Button. The Flash BIOS Button matters on AM5: it updates firmware from a USB stick with no CPU or memory fitted.

Internal headers give 4x USB 2.0, 4x USB 5Gbps Type-A and 1x USB 5Gbps Type-C. That front Type-C is 5Gbps, not 10 or 20, so a case with a fast front port will be held back. Audio is a Realtek ALC897 7.1-channel codec, MSI’s entry-level part. Cooling and lighting headers: 1x CPU fan, 1x combo pump and system fan, 4x system fan, 3x addressable JARGB_V2 and 1x JRGB.

Chipset Versus Board: What the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi Actually Wires Up

AMD B850 is the mid-tier AM5 chipset, below X870 and X870E, and the gap is mostly in how many high-speed lanes and USB controllers a board maker can hang off it. USB4 is something the higher tiers are expected to carry; the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi does not list USB4 or Thunderbolt, and a recent chipset generation is not a reason to assume one is present.

It works the other way too. The PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot is a CPU feature, which is why MSI labels it CPU: you get it because you are using an AM5 processor. What a chipset supports on paper and what a particular board wires up are two different lists, and only the board’s list is worth buying on.

Display output is a single DisplayPort 1.2 at up to 4K 60Hz, usable only with a processor that has integrated graphics. There is no HDMI port on the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi.

Who This Is Not For

If you plan to run integrated graphics into an HDMI monitor or a TV, the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi has no HDMI output at all. The only display connector is DisplayPort 1.2 at 4K 60Hz, and an adapter is an extra cost and an extra failure point.

If onboard audio matters to you, the ALC897 is basic. Driving high-impedance headphones straight from the board will disappoint, and a USB DAC or a higher-tier board is the answer.

If your case has a high-speed front USB-C port, the internal Type-C header is 5Gbps and will limit it. There is no 20Gbps front header, no USB4 and no Thunderbolt.

If you want two graphics cards at full bandwidth, or three Gen4 drives all at full lanes, the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi is the wrong tier. The second and fourth slots are PCIe 3.0 x1 and the third M.2 slot is x2.

And if you bought memory expecting a guaranteed DDR5-8200, adjust your expectations: it is an overclock, it applies to one single-rank module per channel with a Ryzen 9000 CPU, and MSI writes it with a plus sign and an OC label.

FAQ

Does the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi really run DDR5-8200?

8200 MT/s is an overclock, not a rated speed. MSI publishes the rated range as 5600 – 4800 MT/s JEDEC and marks anything above 5600 as OC. The 8200+ figure needs one single-rank module per channel with a Ryzen 9000 processor; fill all four slots and MSI’s own table drops to 6400+ or 6000+ MT/s.

Which processors fit the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi?

AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series desktop processors on Socket AM5, as MSI lists them. AM4 chips do not fit and DDR4 memory cannot be used.

Does the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi have an HDMI port?

No. The only display output is one DisplayPort 1.2 at up to 4K 60Hz, and it works only with a processor that has integrated graphics. With a separate graphics card you use that card’s outputs.

How many M.2 slots does the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi have, and are they the same speed?

3 M.2 slots, and no, they differ. M.2_1 is PCIe 5.0 x4, M.2_2 is PCIe 4.0 x4 and takes 22110 drives, and M.2_3 is PCIe 4.0 x2 – half the lanes and therefore roughly half the peak bandwidth.

Can I run two graphics cards at full speed?

No. Only PCI_E1 is PCIe 5.0 x16. The rest are PCIe 4.0 x4 and two PCIe 3.0 x1, so a second card would be severely limited.

Does the MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi support USB4 or Thunderbolt?

No. MSI does not list either for this board. The fastest ports are 10Gbps Type-A and Type-C on the rear panel, and the front-panel Type-C header is 5Gbps.

Can I update the BIOS without a CPU installed?

Yes. MSI fits a Flash BIOS Button on the rear panel that updates firmware from a USB stick with no processor or memory fitted, which is what you use if the board ships with firmware older than your CPU.
