What B650 means on this board

B650 is the AM5 chipset where PCIe 5.0 is guaranteed for storage but not for the graphics card. On the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE the main slot runs PCIe 4.0 x16 with Ryzen 7000 and 9000 (x8 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 1, x4 with Phoenix 2). For current graphics cards PCIe 4.0 x16 is rarely a bottleneck, so this mainly matters if you plan to keep the board through several graphics card generations. The PCIe 5.0 link goes to the first M.2 slot instead, which is where a Gen5 SSD benefits most.

Slots and M.2 lanes

M2A_CPU runs PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 7000/9000 and PCIe 4.0 x4 with Ryzen 8000. M2P_CPU is a slower CPU-attached slot at PCIe 4.0 x2 with every supported processor, and M2C_SB runs PCIe 4.0 x4 from the chipset. So the second fast drive belongs in M2C_SB, not M2P_CPU. Besides the x16 slot there are three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots: two from the processor (unavailable with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2) and one from the chipset. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports are included, with RAID 0, 1 and 10 for NVMe and SATA. An M.2 Thermal Guard heatsink covers the main SSD.

DDR5 memory: standard and overclocked speeds

Four DDR5 slots in dual channel take up to 256 GB, 64 GB per module, with AMD EXPO and XMP. GIGABYTE lists 4800 and 5200 MT/s as standard speeds and 5600 up to 8000 MT/s as overclocking, which depends on the processor, the kit and the number of modules. GIGABYTE’s DDR5 Auto Booster can raise native DDR5-4800 memory to 5000 under heavy load. For a typical build on the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE, a two-module 6000 MT/s EXPO kit is the practical choice.

Power delivery and cooling

GIGABYTE lists a 12+2+2 phase digital PWM design with low RDS(on) MOSFETs, on a 6-layer, mid-loss PCB described as PCIe 5.0 ready. It does not publish a DrMOS current rating for this board. Cooling is a fully covered one-piece MOSFET heatsink, claimed at up to three times the surface of a traditional design, with a 5 W/mK thermal pad and an integrated I/O shield. CPU power comes through a 24-pin ATX and a single 8-pin ATX12V connector. Smart Fan 6 controls five fan headers, each rated up to 24W with over-current protection and fan stop.

Rear panel, video and audio

The rear panel of the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE has two red USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C, six USB 2.0 ports, a PS/2 port, RJ-45 for the Realtek gigabit LAN and three audio jacks. For processors with integrated graphics there is a DisplayPort 1.4 output up to 3840 x 2160 at 144 Hz and an HDMI 2.1 output up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz. Internally there is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C header for the front panel, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 header, USB 2.0 headers and a serial port header. Audio is a Realtek HD codec with up to 7.1 channels and Audio Noise Guard.

Who This Is Not For

The GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE is not for anyone who needs Wi-Fi or Bluetooth: GIGABYTE lists no wireless module, so you would need an add-in card or USB adapter. Its LAN is 1 Gbps, not 2.5GbE. The graphics slot is PCIe 4.0, not 5.0, there is no USB4, and the front USB-C header is only USB 3.2 Gen 1. M2P_CPU runs at PCIe 4.0 x2, slower than the other two M.2 slots.
