The GIGABYTE X870 Gaming WIFI6 is the entry point to GIGABYTE’s X870 range for Socket AM5. It is an ATX motherboard for Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 processors that keeps the parts X870 is known for, two USB4 Type-C ports at up to 40Gb/s, a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot and a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, while saving cost with an 8+2+2 phase VRM and Wi-Fi 6 instead of Wi-Fi 7. It suits a gaming PC built around a six- or eight-core Ryzen, wired to the router over its 2.5GbE port.

Table of Contents
An 8+2+2 VRM sized for gaming processors
GIGABYTE lists a digital 8+2+2 phase VRM with 60A DrMOS on the VCORE and SOC rails, arranged as a 4+4 parallel design, on a 6-layer, 2X copper PCB. It sits under VRM Thermal Armor Advanced heatsinks with a 5 W/mK thermal pad, and CPU power comes through 8-pin and 4-pin connectors. This is a smaller power stage than the 14-phase X870 Eagle WIFI7 or the 16-phase X870 Gaming X WIFI7. For a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7, including the gaming X3D parts, it is a sensible match. For a 16-core Ryzen 9 under long all-core work the bigger boards are the safer choice, which is the main trade-off on the GIGABYTE X870 Gaming WIFI6.

Wi-Fi 6 instead of Wi-Fi 7
Wireless is the other place GIGABYTE saved cost. The GIGABYTE X870 Gaming WIFI6 uses a Realtek RTL8851BE Wi-Fi 6 module on PCB revision 1.0, working on 2.4 and 5 GHz with 80 MHz channels, plus Bluetooth 5.3. There is no 6 GHz band, so a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router will connect over 5 GHz. The antenna attaches through WIFI EZ-Plug and the rear panel has two SMA connectors. Wired networking is a Realtek 2.5GbE port, and for gaming or large downloads a cable to the router remains the steadier connection. If you want Wi-Fi 7, the X870 Eagle WIFI7 is the next step up.

Memory: four DDR5 slots up to 256 GB
The GIGABYTE X870 Gaming WIFI6 has four DDR5 slots in dual channel for up to 256 GB, 64 GB per module, with AMD EXPO and XMP support. GIGABYTE lists 4400, 4800, 5200 and 5600 MT/s as standard speeds, and 6000 up to 8200 MT/s as overclocking speeds that depend on the processor, the kit and how many modules are installed. A two-module 6000 MT/s EXPO kit is the usual pairing for AM5. AORUS AI SNATCH in the BIOS adds one-click DDR5 boost, and two custom SPD profiles can be saved.

Slots, M.2 storage and SATA
PCIEX16 runs PCIe 5.0 x16 with Ryzen 9000 and 7000, PCIe 4.0 x8 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 1 and PCIe 4.0 x4 with Phoenix 2. Two more full-length slots run PCIe 3.0 x1 from the chipset. M2A_CPU is PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 9000/7000 and PCIe 4.0 with Ryzen 8000. M2B_SB is PCIe 4.0 x4 but drops to x2 when a PCIe SSD is fitted in M2C_SB, which runs PCIe 4.0 x2. Four SATA 6Gb/s ports are included. NVMe RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 is supported, with RAID 5 limited to Ryzen 9000.

USB4, video and the rear panel
The two rear USB4 Type-C ports on the GIGABYTE X870 Gaming WIFI6 reach up to 40Gb/s and carry DisplayPort 1.4 up to 3840 x 2160 at 240 Hz when the processor has integrated graphics. HDMI 2.1 supports up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz. The rear panel also has one red USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, three USB 3.2 Gen 1, four USB 2.0, RJ-45, three audio jacks and the Q-Flash Plus button. Inside there is a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C header for a 20Gb/s front port, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 header and USB 2.0 headers. Audio is a Realtek HD codec with up to 7.1 channels.

Fans, RGB and assembly features
Smart Fan 6 manages six fan headers, each rated up to 24W. RGB Fusion uses three addressable Gen2 headers and one RGB header. GIGABYTE includes PCIe EZ-Latch Plus for one-click graphics card release, M.2 EZ-Latch Plus and EZ-Latch Click for screwless SSD and heatsink fitting, M.2 Thermal Guard, EZ-Debug Zone LEDs and Q-Flash Plus with Auto Scan, which updates the BIOS from a USB drive without a processor or memory installed.

Who This Is Not For
The GIGABYTE X870 Gaming WIFI6 is not the best fit for a 12- or 16-core Ryzen 9 running long all-core workloads, because of its 8+2+2 VRM. It has no 6 GHz Wi-Fi, so buyers with a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router will not get the newer bands. The two extra slots are PCIe 3.0 x1, only one M.2 slot is PCIe 5.0, and it supports Windows 11 64-bit only.
