Processor support and memory
The GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX takes AMD Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 Series processors in the AM5 socket; GIGABYTE advises checking its CPU support list for the BIOS version each chip needs. There are four DDR5 DIMM slots in dual channel, holding up to 256GB with 64GB per module. GIGABYTE lists 4800 and 5200 MT/s as standard speeds and everything from 5600 up to 8000 MT/s as overclocked (OC) speeds, which depend on your processor, the memory kit and the configuration. Both AMD EXPO and XMP profiles are supported, so a rated kit can be set up from the BIOS in one step. For most builds a two-module DDR5-6000 EXPO kit is the practical choice.
GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX: PCIe 5.0 storage, PCIe 4.0 graphics
The main x16 slot on the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX runs at PCIe 4.0 x16 with Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors, at x8 with Ryzen 8000 (Phoenix 1) and at x4 with Phoenix 2 chips. PCIe 5.0 is reserved for the first M.2 slot, M2A_CPU, which runs at PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 7000 and 9000 and at PCIe 4.0 with Ryzen 8000. Today’s graphics cards run very well on PCIe 4.0 x16, so the split puts the newest standard where fast SSDs can use it. The other three slots run at PCIe 3.0 x1: two from the processor (not available with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2) and one from the chipset. That suits a Wi-Fi card, a capture card or a 2.5GbE network card, but not a second graphics card or a 10GbE adapter.
Three M.2 slots on the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX
GIGABYTE fits three M.2 Socket 3 slots, and their speeds differ. M2A_CPU is the fast one at PCIe 5.0 x4 and takes 2280, 2580, 22110 and 25110 drives. M2P_CPU also comes from the processor but runs at PCIe 4.0 x2, so a fast PCIe 4.0 SSD placed there works at roughly half its rated sequential speed. M2C_SB comes from the chipset at PCIe 4.0 x4 and takes 2280 and 22110 drives. A good plan for the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX is the boot drive in M2A_CPU, a second fast drive in M2C_SB and a bulk drive in M2P_CPU. There are also four SATA 6Gb/s ports, and RAID 0, 1 and 10 are supported for NVMe and SATA.
USB, video and networking on the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX
On the rear panel you get two red USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports at 10Gbps, one USB Type-C port at USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) and six USB 2.0 ports, plus a PS/2 port. Use the red Type-A ports for fast external SSDs. Inside there is a front USB Type-C (Gen 1) header, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 header and USB 2.0 headers. The integrated graphics of your Ryzen processor drive one DisplayPort 1.4 output at up to 3840×2160 at 144Hz and one HDMI 2.1 output at up to 4096×2160 at 60Hz. Wired networking is Realtek Gigabit Ethernet. Wi-Fi 6E covers 2.4, 5 and 6GHz with Bluetooth 5.3, using a Realtek RTL8852CE module on PCB revision 1.0 and an Intel AX210 module on revision 1.1, with two antenna connectors on the back.
Cooling, RGB and BIOS tools
The GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX has two CPU fan headers and three system fan headers, and one of each can drive a water-cooling pump. GIGABYTE lists hardware monitoring for voltage, temperature, fan speed and water-cooling flow rate, with fan-fail warnings. For lighting there are three addressable RGB Gen2 headers and one standard RGB header, controlled through the GIGABYTE Control Center software. The 256Mbit BIOS chip supports Q-Flash and Q-Flash Plus; the Q-Flash Plus button lets you update the BIOS from a USB drive with no processor, memory or graphics card installed, which helps when a newer Ryzen chip needs a later BIOS. A TPM header for the GC-TPM2.0 SPI module is also on the board.
Full ATX size
At 30.5 x 24.4 cm, the GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX is a full ATX board. Compared with a micro-ATX board, the extra space puts more distance between the socket, the memory slots and the M.2 slots, which helps with large air coolers and tall memory heatsinks and makes cable routing in an ATX tower easier. GIGABYTE supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 64-bit on this board. Check that your case accepts ATX boards before ordering.
Who This Is Not For
The GIGABYTE B650 EAGLE AX is not for anyone who wants 2.5GbE or faster wired networking on the board: the LAN port is Gigabit. It does not have USB4, and its rear Type-C port runs at 5Gbps only. It is not suited to two graphics cards or a 10GbE card, because three of the four slots run at PCIe 3.0 x1. Only one M.2 slot runs at PCIe 5.0, and the second CPU slot is limited to PCIe 4.0 x2. It is Wi-Fi 6E, not Wi-Fi 7, and as a full ATX board it will not fit micro-ATX or mini-ITX cases.
