Why the Official Licence Actually Matters

Plenty of racing games feature GT3 machinery. This one holds the actual championship licence, which means the teams, liveries, driver line-ups and circuits are the real ones from the GT World Challenge Europe seasons, reproduced from manufacturer data rather than approximated. Kunos built the handling model on top of the physics work from the original Assetto Corsa, then rewrote the tyre and aerodynamic simulation specifically for GT3 racing. The narrower focus is the point: instead of hundreds of loosely modelled cars, you get a small roster simulated to a depth almost nothing else on console attempts.

The PlayStation 5 edition arrived on 24 February 2022 as a genuine rebuild rather than a patched-up last-generation port. Reviewers who found the PS4 and Xbox One versions rough were noticeably kinder to the current-generation release. Unreal Engine 4 handles the night races and wet-weather lighting, and rain in particular transforms a circuit: standing water builds in the natural line, grip disappears, and headlights become the only way to read the track ahead.

The Cars and Circuits You Get

The base console package ships with 24 licensed cars and 11 circuits drawn from the GT3 championship — Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, McLaren, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-AMG and more, on tracks including Spa-Francorchamps, Monza, Brands Hatch and Paul Ricard. Later seasons and additional machinery arrived through separate DLC packs, including the 2023 GT World Challenge Pack, which added the Ferrari 296 GT3, Porsche 911 (992) GT3 R, Lamborghini Huracan EVO2 and Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia.

Car setup is fully open. Tyre pressures, camber, ride height, brake bias, differential, fuel strategy and engine mapping are all adjustable, and the game keeps enough telemetry to tell you whether a change actually helped.

Sprint, Endurance and the Spa 24 Hours

Three race formats define the structure. Sprint races are short and aggressive. Endurance events introduce driver swaps, pit strategy and tyre management over a long distance. Then there is the Spa 24 Hours, the centrepiece of the calendar, run through a full day-night cycle with changing weather. All of it is playable solo against the AI or online, and cross-play was added to the console versions after launch.

Playing With a Racing Wheel

The DualSense works, and works well enough to learn the game. But this is a title that rewards a force feedback wheel more than almost any other console racer, because so much of the information the simulation gives you arrives through the steering: the moment the front tyres lose bite, the weight shifting under braking, the kerb strike that unsettles the rear. Is this a good first sim racing game?

It is demanding. There are driving aids you can switch on while you learn, but the game does not hide its simulation depth, and lap times only come down once you understand tyre temperature and braking technique. Patient beginners get a lot out of it; players expecting arcade handling usually do not.

Do I need a racing wheel?

No. The controller is fully supported and many players compete with it. A wheel gives you feedback the pad physically cannot transmit, so it raises the ceiling considerably rather than being a requirement.
