The Shokz OpenFit Air Black are open-ear earbuds that hook over your ear and rest just outside the ear canal, so you hear your music and your surroundings at the same time. Shokz’s DirectPitch air-conduction technology aims the sound into your ear while cancelling much of what would leak outwards. In black, the matte silicone is paired with a metallic silver ring, and Shokz quotes up to 6 hours per charge and 28 hours in total with the case.

Shokz OpenFit Air Black: The Colour Up Close
Shokz finishes the OpenFit Air in soft-touch matte silicone with a metallic silver ring around the speaker, and on the black version that ring is the only bright detail. From a distance the hooks almost disappear against dark hair, which makes the Shokz OpenFit Air Black the most discreet of the three colours, alongside White and Pink.
Black is also the practical pick for daily training. Sweat marks, sunscreen and the grey film that builds up on silicone are far less visible than on White, so a quick wipe with a dry cloth keeps them looking new.
DirectPitch: Open-Ear Sound Without Bone Conduction
The Shokz OpenFit Air Black does not use bone conduction. Shokz’s DirectPitch technology is air conduction: it uses reverse sound waves to direct sound pressure towards the ear canal while reducing leakage around you. Inside each earbud is an 18 × 11 mm composite dynamic driver with a dome-shaped diaphragm and polymer surround, which Shokz says sounds like a 16 mm prototype, plus OpenBass Air for low-frequency enhancement.
Built-in Dynamic Range Control adjusts EQ in real time, and the Shokz App adds four preset EQ modes and one custom mode.
Fit for Running, the Gym and Glasses
The Air-Earhook uses a 0.75 mm flexible nickel-titanium memory alloy, and Shokz designed it to sit comfortably with glasses, hats and helmets. Each earbud weighs 8.7 g (± 0.2 g) and there is one universal size. For outdoor runs in the UAE, the Shokz OpenFit Air Black keeps traffic and cyclists audible, and Shokz reminds users to keep the volume at a level where surroundings stay clear.
IP54 protects the earbuds against sweat, dust and light splashes; the charging case is not water-resistant, so dry the earbuds before charging.
Calls, Controls and Multipoint
Four microphones on the Shokz OpenFit Air Black use adaptive beamforming for calls. In Shokz’s lab simulations of intersections, stations and restaurants at 65–72 dB(A), the microphone layout improved signal-to-noise ratio by an average of 29 dB, which Shokz expresses as a 96.5% reduction in environmental noise.
Touch controls: double-tap either side to answer or end a call, double-tap left to play or pause and right for the next track, and press and hold left or right to change volume. Controls can be remapped or disabled in the app, which also helps if sweat or hair triggers accidental touches. Multipoint connects two devices at once but is off by default; turn it on in the Shokz App, and the Shokz OpenFit Air Black remembers up to five devices.
Battery and Charging
For the Shokz OpenFit Air Black, Shokz quotes up to 6 hours of listening per charge and up to 28 hours with the case, measured at 25 ±2 °C with AAC audio at 50% volume. A 10-minute quick charge gives about 2 hours of listening when the case shows its green light. A full charge takes 1 hour for the earbuds in the case and 2 hours for an empty case over USB-C. Bluetooth 5.2 gives a range of up to 10 m, the earbuds pair when you open the case, and either earbud works on its own.
Who This Is Not For
On the Shokz OpenFit Air Black, open-ear means no noise isolation and no active noise cancellation, so on a noisy metro or flight you will turn the volume up and people nearby may hear more. IP54 is not swim-proof, and the case has no water resistance. Anyone wanting longer battery life should look at the Shokz OpenFit 2, which Shokz rates at up to 11 hours per charge and 48 hours with the case; the original Shokz OpenFit offers 7 hours per charge.
