In black, the earbuds and charging case are one dark tone, and the hooks almost disappear against dark hair. That makes the Shokz OpenFit Pro Black the low-key option: it does not draw attention on a video call, at the office or on the train, and nobody reads it as a fashion accessory.

Black is also the practical choice for a gym bag. Sweat marks, sunscreen and the grey film that builds up on ear hooks after months of workouts are far less visible than on the white version. Dust and lint show a little on the dark case, and a dry cloth deals with them.

SuperBoost drivers and Dolby Atmos on the Shokz OpenFit Pro Black

Each earbud uses an 11 x 20 mm driver with synchronised dual diaphragms, which Shokz says is equivalent to a 16.7 mm round speaker. Shokz SuperBoost pushes more low-end energy into an open design, and DirectPitch 3.0 aims the output at your ear rather than at the room.

The sound is optimised for Dolby Atmos, and head tracking can be switched on and calibrated in the Shokz App. You hear the Atmos effect with Dolby Atmos content; ordinary stereo tracks play as stereo.

Open-ear noise reduction, and what to expect from it

The OpenFit Pro applies active noise reduction to an earbud that does not seal your ear. Shokz uses a triple-mic system, two feedforward microphones and one feedback microphone, with an ear-adaptive algorithm that measures what reaches your ear and counters it.

In practice it takes the edge off steady background noise such as air conditioning hum and road noise while you can still hear people speak to you. Shokz notes that the effect varies with ear shape, fit and environment, and an open design cannot isolate you the way sealed in-ear ANC earbuds do.

With noise reduction off, Shokz rates the earbuds at up to 12 hours per charge and 50 hours in total with the case. With noise reduction on, those figures fall to 6 hours and 24 hours. A 10-minute quick charge gives up to 4 hours of playback.

Fit, buttons and durability

Bass and isolation are weaker than sealed in-ear earbuds, and the open-ear noise reduction will not silence an aircraft cabin or a loud metro the way sealed ANC does.

At 12.3 g per earbud, the Pro is heavier than lighter open earbuds such as the OpenFit 2. The charging case is not water resistant, and Shokz does not publish the Bluetooth codecs it supports, so buyers who want LDAC or aptX should look elsewhere.
