Red Dead Redemption is Rockstar Games’ 2010 western, and this disc is the PlayStation 4 release that also carries its zombie expansion, Undead Nightmare. This copy is the PS4 edition in the European box, rated PEGI 18. It plays on PS5 as well: Rockstar says the PS4 version runs in full 4K on PS5 through backward compatibility, and since December 2, 2025 PS4 owners can also claim a free upgrade to the native PS5 version, provided the disc is in a PS5 with a disc drive.

Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare in One Package

Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17, 2023, together as one package for the first time on those consoles, with physical copies following later. The cover says it plainly: featuring the classic stories of Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare.

The main game follows former outlaw John Marston. Undead Nightmare reimagines the same frontier as a horror story in which Marston fights to survive a relentless zombie horde. They are two different campaigns on one disc, so you get a straight western and a supernatural twist on it.

Game of the Year Bonus Content and Hardcore Mode

According to Rockstar, this release includes bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition: the classic Tomahawk, Explosive Rifle and Golden Guns weapons, plus the Savvy Merchant and Expert Hunter outfits, and more. Red Dead Redemption also includes Hardcore mode for players who want a stricter challenge, and Trophy support on PlayStation 4.

Rockstar also added language options that the original did not have, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Latin American Spanish, on top of the languages already supported.

How It Runs on PS4, PS4 Pro and PS5

Rockstar states that Red Dead Redemption runs at 30 frames per second at up to 1080p on PlayStation 4, up to 4K on PS4 Pro, and in full 4K on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility.

There is now a second route on PS5. The PlayStation Store lists a native PS5 version released on December 2, 2025, with 60fps gameplay, up to 4K resolution, HDR, better image quality and draw distance, and DualSense vibration. Existing PS4 owners get it as a free upgrade, but the store is clear about discs: you must insert this PS4 disc into the PS5 every time you play the PS5 version, and a PS5 Digital Edition cannot upgrade from a disc copy.

Red Dead Redemption or Red Dead Redemption 2?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a separate, larger game that came out in 2018 and is set before this one, so John Marston’s story in Red Dead Redemption picks up after it. Rockstar’s 2023 announcement invites players to relive, or experience for the first time, the story of former outlaw John Marston. You can play either first; this one is the shorter, more focused game.

Who This Is Not For

Red Dead Redemption is not for players under 18; the box carries PEGI 18. It is not a multiplayer game in this release: the PlayStation Store lists it for one player, so the online modes of the 2010 original are not part of it. It is not for owners of a PS5 Digital Edition who expect to use the free PS5 upgrade, because the upgrade does not work from a disc copy on that console. And players expecting a ground-up remake with new missions will find a faithful port of the original game, not a rebuild.
