Backbeat PS5 asks a question no other puzzle game does: what if solving the level composed the music? Set in suburban Washington D.C. in 1995, it follows Stephanie “Watts” Watson, a young woman who discovers funk, assembles a band out of misfits, and has to physically get all four of them across town to the Battle of the Bands without getting caught.

Sokoban With a Rhythm Section
The board is isometric and turn-based. You move four characters across it, and everyone has to reach the exit — not eventually, but in coordination, within a fixed number of turns. If you spend your resources badly the level simply becomes unsolvable, and you rewind. Rewinding is unlimited and instant, so failure costs nothing but thinking time.
What lifts it above ordinary block-pushing is that four separate musical resource meters govern what each character can do and when. Managing them efficiently is the actual puzzle; movement is just how you express the solution.
Four Bandmates, Four Moves
Each musician has a resource-limited super move tied to their instrument. The bassist slips through tight gaps. The keytar player slides straight past guards. The drummer smashes through walls. The saxophonist blows obstacles clean out of the way. None of these are interchangeable, so every level is a question of which member you spend and when.
Using super moves cleverly does not just open more routes — it is how you reach a maximum score, because the game grades the elegance of your solution rather than just its success.
Backbeat PS5 and Its Live Funk Soundtrack
Here is the part that makes Backbeat PS5 memorable. The soundtrack is not sequenced from samples; developer Ichigoichie recorded a large pool of live riffs, improvisations and solos from funk musicians in Stockholm, with composer Pete Fraser. Every action you take — turning a corner, opening a door, blowing a guard aside with the sax — queues up a specific audio clip.
When you finish a level, those clips play back in sequence. Your solution becomes a victory song that nobody else will have composed the same way. The studio also built the DualSense into this, using the controller as part of the instrumentation rather than as a rumble effect.

A 1995 Story Told Properly
Ichigoichie describe it as a homage to the 16 and 32-bit story-driven games of the 1990s, and specifically to the last days of analogue life before the internet arrived. The tone is an ensemble dramedy: the characters argue, doubt each other, and grow, and the writing has enough personality that the puzzle sections feel earned rather than bolted on. It was the studio’s second game, after Hexagroove: Tactical DJ.
A Region-Free Physical Disc
The PlayStation 5 physical edition was manufactured and distributed by Limited Run Games on behalf of Ichigoichie, on a region-free disc, produced in a single limited window rather than kept in ongoing production. Details are on the Limited Run Games Backbeat PS5 page.

FAQ – Backbeat PS5
Do I need rhythm skills to play?
No. Despite the music, this is not a rhythm game. Nothing is timed to a beat and there is no button-matching. The music is generated by your puzzle solution, not the other way round.
Is the game difficult?
The later levels are demanding, but unlimited rewind removes all pressure. You experiment freely until the solution clicks, which makes it welcoming even for players who normally avoid strategy games.
How long is it?
Roughly eight to twelve hours depending on how long individual puzzles hold you up and whether you chase maximum scores.
Is the disc region-locked?
No. The PlayStation 5 physical release is region-free and plays on any PS5 with a disc drive.
Is there any voice acting?
The story is told through written dialogue with strong character writing rather than full voice performance, which keeps the focus on the music.
Does Totot deliver across the UAE?
Yes. We ship nationwide via Aramex for a fixed AED 10, with cash on delivery, Tabby and Tamara available at checkout.
