Before each level you draw from a deck you built yourself, and the cards you play modify your character — more health, faster reloads, extra melee damage, stamina changes, team-wide buffs. The game answers with Corruption Cards of its own, which alter the level itself: fog, tougher special enemies, timed objectives, whole new hazards.

Back 4 Blood PS5 Co-op: Four Cleaners Against the Ridden

On the Back 4 Blood, you pick one of twelve survivors, called Cleaners, each with their own passive bonuses and team perks, and fight through chapters against the Ridden — the infected. Beyond the standard horde there are Special Ridden built to break your formation, up to and including the Ogre, a genuinely enormous creature that turns an ordinary level into a running escape.

On the Back 4 Blood, four-player online co-op is the intended way to play, and it is where the game is at its best: shouting about ammo, reviving each other, and watching a plan collapse because someone alerted a horde. Solo play with AI teammates is supported for anyone without a squad.

Swarm: Playing as the Monsters

On the Back 4 Blood, swarm is the competitive mode, and it flips the perspective. Teams take turns playing as the Cleaners and as the Ridden, with the monster side choosing mutations and abilities to hunt the human team inside a shrinking arena. It is a compact, round-based PvP built on the same systems rather than a separate game bolted on.

Cross-Play, Cross-Gen and the Free PS5 Upgrade

On the Back 4 Blood, the game launched with cross-play and cross-generation support across every platform, so PlayStation, Xbox and PC players can fill the same lobby. Warner Bros. also confirmed at launch that anyone who owns the PlayStation 4 version gets access to the PlayStation 5 version at no extra cost — worth knowing if you are buying for a household with both consoles. On the Back 4 Blood, the base campaign runs across four acts, and players typically report somewhere around twenty-six hours to see it through at a normal difficulty. Three expansions were released afterwards, adding new campaign content, Cleaners and cards. Can I play alone?

Yes. AI teammates fill the other three slots. The game is clearly designed around human squads, but solo campaign play is fully supported.

Does it need an internet connection?

On the Back 4 Blood, online co-op and Swarm require a connection and a PlayStation Plus subscription. Solo campaign play against AI works offline.

Is it the same as Left 4 Dead?

On the Back 4 Blood, same designers and the same core rhythm, but the card system makes it a different game in practice. Runs vary far more, and character progression is deeper.

Is the game still being updated?
