The Google TV Streamer 4K is Google’s set-top streaming box, which Google compares with its earlier Chromecast with Google TV (4K), and this is the Google TV Streamer 4K Porcelain, the light-coloured version. It plays up to 4K HDR at 60 fps with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, has 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, and doubles as a smart home hub with a built-in Thread border router for Matter devices.

Google TV Streamer 4K Porcelain: Picture and Sound
Video output goes up to 4K HDR at 60 frames per second, with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG all supported, so it can match whichever HDR format your TV and streaming app use. For sound it passes Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos to a compatible TV, soundbar or receiver.
The connection to the TV is HDMI 2.1, and Google specifies that a certified HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately; there is no HDMI cable in the box. Plan for one before the Google TV Streamer 4K Porcelain arrives.
More Memory and Storage Than a Stick
Google fitted 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. By Google’s own comparison, Chromecast with Google TV (4K) has 2 GB of memory and 8 GB of storage, and the Streamer’s processor is 22% faster. In practice that means room for more apps and games, and quicker switching between them.
The Google TV interface gathers films and series from your installed apps into one home screen with recommendations, and the device runs Android TV OS. Google states five years of security updates for the Google TV Streamer 4K Porcelain.
A Smart Home Hub Under the TV
The streamer includes a Thread border router and works as a hub for Matter and Google Home. Long-press the home button on the remote to open the Home panel and control compatible lights, cameras and other devices on the TV screen without picking up your phone.
Thread-based Matter devices need a border router to join your network, so if you are starting a smart home, the Google TV Streamer 4K Porcelain can fill that role from the TV cabinet.
Ethernet, Wi-Fi and the Voice Remote
A built-in Ethernet port (10/100/1000 Mbps) lets you wire the box straight to your router for steadier 4K streaming. Wireless connections are Wi-Fi 802.11ac on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, plus Bluetooth 5.1 for headphones and game controllers.
The Voice Remote comes with two AAA batteries and has a customisable button that you can set to open an app, switch inputs or open the Home panel. If the remote goes missing between the sofa cushions, press the button on the Google TV Streamer 4K Porcelain or ask Google, and the remote rings.
Why Porcelain
Porcelain is a soft off-white that suits light TV units, white walls and pale wood. The Google TV Streamer 4K Porcelain is designed to sit on the TV cabinet next to the screen rather than hide behind it, so the colour matters: Porcelain blends into light furniture, while it stands out more against dark wood or a black unit.
A light finish shows dust less than black but can pick up marks from hands over time; a dry microfibre cloth keeps it clean. Google also makes a Hazel version, which Google lists on its US store.
What Is in the Box
Google includes the streamer, the Voice Remote with two AAA batteries, a power adapter, a 1.8 m power cable and a quick start guide. The Google TV Streamer 4K Porcelain measures 162 x 76 x 27 mm (6.4 x 3.0 x 1.0 in) and weighs about 162 g (5.7 oz), and Google says it is made with at least 65% recycled plastic.
Who This Is Not For
If your TV has no free HDMI port, or you do not want to buy an HDMI 2.1 cable, the Google TV Streamer 4K Porcelain is not the simplest option. Output tops out at 4K 60 fps, so anyone hoping for 120 Hz from the box will not get it, and the Wi-Fi is 802.11ac rather than Wi-Fi 6.
Google does not publish the power adapter’s input rating or plug type on its specification page. And if you already have a smart TV with a fast built-in Google TV system and no interest in Matter or Thread, the upgrade may be small.
