What the Chromecast with Google TV 4K Does
Plug the dongle into the TV’s HDMI port, power it over USB-C, and you get the Google TV home screen: apps such as YouTube and Netflix side by side, with recommendations pulled from the services you use. It is the quickest way to give an older non-smart TV, or a smart TV with a slow built-in system, a modern interface.
The Chromecast with Google TV 4K also still casts. Videos, photos and music from Cast-enabled apps on your phone can be sent straight to the TV, which is handy when guests want to share something without logging in to your accounts.
Picture and Sound
Google lists output up to 4K Ultra HD with HDR at up to 60 fps, and support for HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision. Which HDR format you actually see depends on your TV and on the app, so a Dolby Vision TV paired with a service that streams in Dolby Vision gets the most from it.
For sound, the Chromecast with Google TV 4K handles Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus, and sends Dolby Atmos onward through HDMI pass-through. That means Atmos needs a TV, soundbar or AV receiver that can decode it; the dongle itself does not create surround sound.
The Voice Remote
The Snow remote of the Chromecast with Google TV 4K is small and runs on two AAA batteries, which come in the box. It has a microphone for Google Assistant voice search, a directional pad, volume buttons and shortcut buttons for YouTube and Netflix. An infrared emitter lets it control the power and volume of many TVs and soundbars, so you can often put the TV’s own remote away.

Setup and Requirements
Setting up the Chromecast with Google TV 4K is done from the Google Home app on a phone or tablet: Google lists Android 9.0 or later, or iPhone and iPad with iOS 17.0 or later. Google does not support setting it up from a computer.
Your TV needs an HDMI input with HDCP 1.3 or higher. For 4K, Google specifies a 4K-capable display with HDCP 2.2 and an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps. The dongle connects over Wi-Fi 802.11ac on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; for wired internet, Google sells an Ethernet adapter separately.

Google TV arranges content in tabs, and Google states that the tab options depend on your country and language. Some tabs, such as the Free tab of free channels, are US-only; outside the US you get a Discover tab with personalised recommendations instead. It also has no built-in Ethernet port, uses Wi-Fi 5 rather than Wi-Fi 6, and passes Dolby Atmos through rather than decoding it. If your TV already runs Google TV or Android TV well, the dongle adds little.
