Red Dead Redemption PS5 finally brings Rockstar’s 2010 western to current-generation hardware natively. This is the game that made John Marston a household name — a former outlaw blackmailed by federal agents into hunting down the gang he once rode with, in the last years before the American frontier disappeared for good.

John Marston and a Debt That Cannot Be Paid

Marston wants out. He has a wife, a son, a ranch and a past, and government men have taken the first three hostage until he deals with the last one. What follows is a slow ride across New Austin and into Mexico, killing people he used to call brothers, in the service of a state that has no intention of letting him go clean.

The ending is the reason people still talk about this game sixteen years later. It is one of the few moments in the medium that genuinely earns comparison to the westerns it draws from, and it lands harder now that Red Dead Redemption 2 has filled in everything that came before.

Red Dead Redemption PS5: What Native Actually Means Here

Until December 2025 the only way to play this on a PlayStation 5 was through backward compatibility with the 2023 PlayStation 4 port. This release is a proper native build, developed by Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games in collaboration with Rockstar, running at 4K and a stable 60 frames per second.

Anyone who already owned the PlayStation 4 version received a free digital upgrade and could carry their save file straight across, which is worth knowing if you have an old copy sitting in a drawer.

Undead Nightmare Is Included

The zombie expansion ships in the same package at no extra cost. Undead Nightmare takes the same map, the same characters and the same horses, and drops a plague on all of it — Marston hunting a cure while towns fall and the dead walk. It is played almost entirely for dark comedy and it holds up better than most standalone horror games from the same era.

Where It Sits Next to Red Dead Redemption 2

This one came first in 1899 terms it comes second: Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel set twelve years earlier. Chronologically you would play the 2018 game first. Emotionally, most people recommend the opposite, because meeting Marston here and then watching his younger self hits considerably harder than the reverse.

What This Version Is and Is Not

We would rather set expectations correctly. This is a native port with modern resolution, frame rate and platform features — not a ground-up remake with rebuilt assets. Some players expected the latter and said so loudly at launch. If you want the definitive, best-performing way to play the original Red Dead Redemption on a PlayStation, this is it. If you were hoping for the world rebuilt in the Red Dead Redemption 2 engine, that game does not exist.

Should I play this or Red Dead Redemption 2 first?

Either works. RDR2 is the prequel, so chronological order means starting there. Most long-time fans suggest playing this one first, in release order, so the prequel gains its full weight.

Is there multiplayer?
