The GIGABYTE B650E AORUS Elite X AX ICE is a white ATX motherboard for Socket AM5, supporting Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 processors. The E in B650E means the graphics slot runs PCIe 5.0, not only the M.2 slot, and the X marks GIGABYTE’s refreshed version of the AORUS Elite. It brings a 12+2+2 phase VRM on 60A DrMOS with a heatpipe-linked heatsink, three M.2 slots, four DDR5 slots, Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3 and Realtek 2.5GbE, in GIGABYTE’s white ICE finish.

12+2+2 power with a heatpipe heatsink

GIGABYTE lists a digital twin 12+2+2 phase VRM: 12 VCORE and 2 SOC phases on 60A DrMOS plus 2 MISC phases, with VCORE as a 6+6 parallel design, on a 6-layer, 2X copper, mid-loss PCB. The VRM heatsinks are joined by a 6 mm heatpipe and sit on a 7 W/mK thermal pad. CPU power uses 8-pin plus 4-pin ATX12V connectors. On the B650E AORUS Elite X AX ICE this leaves plenty of headroom for a Ryzen 7 X3D gaming chip and handles a 12- or 16-core Ryzen 9 well for a board in this class.

The USB-C port: faster with Ryzen 8000

One rear specification surprises many buyers. The rear USB Type-C port on the B650E AORUS Elite X AX ICE is wired to the processor, and GIGABYTE rates it at up to 40Gb/s with a Ryzen 8000 APU but up to 10Gb/s with Ryzen 7000 or 9000. The difference comes from the processor’s own USB controller. The same port carries DisplayPort 1.4 with HDR up to 3840 x 2160 at 144 Hz when the processor has graphics. The rear HDMI 2.1 port supports up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz, and an internal HDMI 1.4 header (up to 1920 x 1080 at 30 Hz) is meant for a small in-case Sensor Panel display.

Memory and three M.2 slots

Four DDR5 slots hold up to 256 GB, 64 GB per module, with EXPO and XMP. GIGABYTE lists 4800 and 5200 MT/s as standard and 5600 up to 8000 MT/s as overclocking, depending on the processor and kit; DDR5 Auto Booster can raise native 4800 memory to 5000. Storage on the B650E AORUS Elite X AX ICE uses three M.2 slots: M2A_CPU at PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 7000/9000 (PCIe 4.0 with Ryzen 8000), M2B_CPU at PCIe 4.0 x4 (x2 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 2) and M2C_SB at PCIe 4.0 x4 from the chipset. M.2 Thermal Guard XL covers the first slot, and four SATA 6Gb/s ports are included.

Expansion slots

PCIEX16 runs PCIe 5.0 x16 with Ryzen 7000 and 9000, dropping to PCIe 4.0 x8 with Ryzen 8000 Phoenix 1 and x4 with Phoenix 2. GIGABYTE reinforces it as a PCIe UD Slot X and adds PCIe EZ-Latch for easier graphics card removal. Two further full-length slots run PCIe 3.0 x1 from the chipset, suitable for sound, capture or Wi-Fi cards but not for a second graphics card. M.2 EZ-Latch Plus and EZ-Latch Click let you fit SSDs and heatsinks without screws.

USB, Wi-Fi 6E and audio

Besides the Type-C port, the rear panel of the B650E AORUS Elite X AX ICE has two red USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, five USB 3.2 Gen 1 and four USB 2.0 ports, plus a Q-Flash Plus button. Inside is a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C header for a 20Gb/s front port. Wi-Fi 6E works on 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz with 160 MHz channels and Bluetooth 5.3; GIGABYTE lists Realtek RTL8852CE on PCB revision 1.0 and Intel AX210 on revision 1.1. Wired networking is Realtek 2.5GbE, and audio is 7.1 channel from a Realtek ALC897 codec, according to GIGABYTE’s feature page.

Fans, lighting and the white finish

Six fan headers (CPU, CPU/pump, three system and one system/pump) each support up to 24W with over-current protection under Smart Fan 6. RGB Fusion runs three addressable Gen2 headers and one RGB header. The ICE version is GIGABYTE’s white edition of the board, intended for white cases and components. Who This Is Not For

The B650E AORUS Elite X AX ICE is not for anyone counting on 40Gb/s from the rear USB-C port with a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 processor: it runs at up to 10Gb/s with those chips. It has no USB4 ports, its two extra slots are PCIe 3.0 x1, and GIGABYTE lists RAID 0/1/10 only, with no RAID 5. The Wi-Fi chip differs between PCB revisions.
