The JBL Grip Squad is JBL’s compact upright speaker in the Squad finish, a camouflage pattern of greens, browns and sand tones woven into the fabric grille. It is the Grip for people whose speaker lives in the boot with the camping gear, rides along on fishing trips and comes back from the desert covered in dust. Inside, the JBL Grip Squad is the same as every other Grip: a 43 × 80 mm full-range driver rated at 16 W RMS with AI Sound Boost, IP68 protection, a 1 m drop rating onto concrete, an ambient light on the back panel and Auracast over Bluetooth 5.4.

Why Choose the Camouflage Finish
A solid fabric grille shows every mark, while a pattern hides them. That is the practical case for the JBL Grip Squad: fine sand, mud splashes and scuffs disappear into the camouflage, so it still looks tidy after a season of trips, where the white Grip would need regular rinsing. The pattern suits owners of khaki bags and outdoor gear, hunters and fishermen, and anyone who likes a rugged look on a garage shelf or a man-cave desk. It is less at home in a bright, minimalist living room, where a solid colour looks cleaner.

Built for Desert Trips
The JBL Grip Squad is rated IP68, which JBL’s manual tests at 1.5 m for 30 minutes, so sand, dust and an unexpected rain shower are covered. JBL also designs it to keep playing after a 1 m drop onto concrete, the kind of fall that happens from a tailgate or a camp table. Its upright shape, 64 mm wide and about 15 cm tall, fits a door pocket or a cup holder in the car. The maximum operating temperature is 45 °C, so in summer keep it in the shade rather than on a sunny bonnet.

16 W RMS and AI Sound Boost Around the Campfire
A single 43 × 80 mm driver delivers 16 W RMS, a continuous rating, with a frequency response of 70 Hz to 20 kHz at -6 dB. AI Sound Boost analyses the music in real time and adjusts the output so it stays fuller and less distorted as you turn it up. In practice the JBL Grip Squad fills a tent, a small majlis or a group sitting around a fire; it is clearly louder than pocket speakers such as the Go 5, but it is not meant for a large open-air party. The 7-band EQ in the JBL Portable app fine-tunes the bass.

A Night’s Battery and the Back Light
JBL quotes up to 12 hours of playback from the 10.01 Wh battery, plus about 2 more with Playtime Boost, depending on volume and content. That covers an evening at camp and music the next morning. A full charge takes about 3 hours from a 5 V / 3 A source over USB-C, so a power bank or car charger can top it up; no USB cable comes in the box. The ambient light on the back of the JBL Grip Squad switches themes with the side button and dims in the app, a soft glow behind the speaker once the sun goes down.

Two Grips and Auracast
Bluetooth 5.4 with Auracast lets two Grips play as a stereo pair for a wider sound, and lets several Auracast-enabled JBL speakers join the same playlist, handy when friends bring their own. Pairing depends on Auracast, so older JBL speakers without it cannot join. JBL lists no built-in microphone in the Grip specifications, so it is a music speaker, not a speakerphone.

Who This Is Not For
The JBL Grip Squad is not for a large outdoor party: 16 W RMS from one driver suits a small group. It must not run above 45 °C, which matters on a UAE summer afternoon. No USB cable is included, JBL lists no microphone for calls, and stereo pairing works only with Auracast-enabled JBL speakers. If you want a clean single-colour look for a modern living room, the camouflage pattern will feel out of place.
