Why a Centre Channel Matters on the JBL Cinema SB550
Most film and TV dialogue is mixed into the centre channel. A 2.1 soundbar has to blend it into the left and right speakers, which is why voices often get lost under music and effects. The JBL Cinema SB550 has a dedicated centre, so speech has its own driver in the middle of the bar.
Inside the bar JBL uses three 45 × 100 mm racetrack drivers and two 13 mm tweeters. The remote’s VOICE mode, which JBL describes as the setting for news and weather programmes, is the one to try when the problem is understanding what people are saying rather than volume.
The Wireless Subwoofer
The subwoofer uses a 5.25-inch (133 mm) driver and connects to the bar over a 2.4 GHz wireless link, so the only cable it needs is power. The two units pair automatically when switched on; if they lose each other, holding the pairing button on the sub for 3 seconds until it flashes amber and then powering on the bar pairs them again.
JBL recommends placing the sub at least 1 m from the soundbar and about 10 cm from a wall. Bass level on the JBL Cinema SB550 is adjustable in five steps from the remote, with level 3 as the default — useful in apartments where neighbours share a wall.
Power Figures, Read Correctly
The 250W headline figure on the JBL Cinema SB550 is maximum power measured at 1% total harmonic distortion. JBL splits it as 150W for the bar and 100W for the subwoofer. It is not an RMS (continuous) rating, and JBL does not publish an RMS figure or a maximum SPL for this model. The published frequency response is 45 Hz to 20 kHz at −10 dB.
In practice this is a system for a living room or bedroom TV rather than a large open-plan space, and it is a clear step up from the speakers built into a thin TV.
Connections and TV Control
There is one HDMI ARC connection (HDCP 1.4), one optical input, a USB-A port (JBL lists MP3 playback from it on the US version only, and this unit is the UK version), and Bluetooth 5.3 with A2DP 1.3 and AVRCP 1.6. With HDMI ARC and CEC, the TV remote controls the JBL Cinema SB550’s volume and power. If your TV does not support CEC, the bar has an IR learning mode that teaches its buttons to respond to your TV remote.
The bar goes to standby after about 10 minutes without a signal, and wakes automatically when the TV turns on over HDMI ARC or when audio arrives on the optical input.
Size, Mounting and Mains Power
The bar measures 950 × 64 × 80 mm and weighs 2.5 kg; the subwoofer is 200 × 324 × 250 mm and 4.2 kg. That width suits TVs of roughly 50 inches and larger, and a wall-mount bracket kit is in the box. JBL’s specification lists a 100–240V AC, 50/60 Hz power supply, so the JBL Cinema SB550 runs directly on UAE mains, and standby power is under 0.5W.

Dolby Audio, Not Dolby Atmos
JBL lists Dolby Audio decoding for the JBL Cinema SB550. It does not list Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or up-firing drivers, and a 3.1 layout has no height or rear channels. Films mixed in Atmos will play, but as a front-stage mix without the overhead effects. If surround and height effects are what you want, look at a 5.1 or Atmos system instead.
Who This Is Not For
The JBL Cinema SB550 is not for buyers who want Dolby Atmos or rear surround speakers. JBL lists HDMI ARC rather than eARC and only one HDMI connection, so there are no HDMI inputs for a console to pass through. JBL does not list Wi-Fi, so streaming is Bluetooth only, and JBL lists USB music playback for the US version only. And at 95 cm wide, the bar will overhang a small bedroom TV.
