amiibo Donkey Kong in this listing is the Super Mario Collection figure: Donkey Kong standing with his fists up and his red DK tie, on a red base, in the Super Mario amiibo box. Nintendo released this version in Europe on 7 October 2016. Tap it on a compatible Nintendo Switch game and it does something in that game, from fighting as a trained Donkey Kong in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to unlocking a Donkey Kong Mii suit in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Which amiibo Donkey Kong Is This?
Nintendo makes more than one Donkey Kong amiibo, and they look different. The Super Smash Bros. Collection figure, number 4 in that line, shows Donkey Kong mid-leap on a dark base. The figure sold here is the Super Mario Collection version: an upright Donkey Kong with both fists raised, standing on a red base, packed in a box with the Super Mario logo at the top.
Both figures are official Nintendo amiibo and both work with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but if you are completing a numbered Smash collection, this is not the Smash figure. If you collect the Super Mario line, this one sits next to Mario, Luigi, Peach and the rest of that series.
What amiibo Donkey Kong Does in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate the figure is read and written, which is the deepest kind of amiibo support. Nintendo describes it this way: you bring your amiibo into the game as a powerful fighter that grows and evolves over time. The figure becomes a computer-controlled Donkey Kong that levels up as it fights, and you can take it to a friend’s console and let it battle there.
Because the game writes training data to the figure, an amiibo can hold save data for one game at a time. If you later want to use the write feature of another game, you clear the old data first in the console’s amiibo settings.
More Nintendo Switch Games That Read It
Nintendo’s page for this figure lists a long run of Switch games, and in most of them amiibo Donkey Kong is read only, meaning a quick tap gives you a bonus. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe you unlock a Mii suit based on Donkey Kong’s look. In Super Mario Odyssey a tap reveals the location of a Power Moon. In Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury you can summon a Super Star, and in Super Mario Party you unlock Shiny Stickers.
Outside the Mario games it is just as useful. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild give weapons and materials, Kirby and the Forgotten Land gives coins and items, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker boosts your 1-Ups, Yoshi’s Crafted World unlocks a costume for Yoshi, Miitopia unlocks themed outfits, and Monster Hunter Rise gives an in-game lottery ticket once a day.
How to Use It on Nintendo Switch
amiibo use NFC. On a Nintendo Switch, hold the figure’s base over the right stick of the right Joy-Con or over the NFC area of a Pro Controller when the game asks for it. A Nintendo Switch Lite has the reader built into the right stick area. There is no battery and nothing to charge; the figure simply stores a small amount of data in its base.
amiibo Donkey Kong does not unlock full games or paid downloadable content. Each game decides what the tap gives, so check the game’s own amiibo menu to see where to use it.
Who This Is Not For
amiibo Donkey Kong in the Super Mario Collection is not for collectors who need the numbered Super Smash Bros. figure, since the pose, base and box are different. It is not for anyone without a compatible game: on its own it is a display figure and does nothing. And it is not a way to unlock big chunks of content, because most games treat it as a small daily bonus rather than a key to new levels.
