Desperados 3, officially titled Desperados III, is what THQ Nordic calls a story-driven, hardcore tactical stealth game set in a ruthless Wild West. Developed by Mimimi Games and published by THQ Nordic, it was released on PlayStation 4 on 15 June 2020 as the long-awaited prequel to the classic Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive. This is the PS4 disc version. It is a single-player game, and PlayStation notes it is also playable on PS5 through backward compatibility, although some PS4 features may be absent there.

The story: John Cooper and his gang
PlayStation and THQ Nordic describe the same setup: John Cooper joins forces with the runaway bride Kate, the shady hitman Doc McCoy, the giant trapper Hector, and Isabelle, a mysterious lady from New Orleans. Cooper is on a quest for redemption, and the road takes the gang from rural towns over swamps and riverbanks to a final showdown worthy of Wild West legend. THQ Nordic lists frontier towns, mysterious swamps and sprawling modern cities among the settings. In Desperados 3 each level is a puzzle of guard patrols, sightlines and timing, wrapped in a Western story that moves from one tense place to the next.
Five characters, five toolkits
Every member of the gang plays differently. Cooper, a drifter, gunslinger and natural leader, can kill quietly with a knife or take out multiple foes with his revolvers. Strongman Hector carries a giant bear trap and handles the toughest opponents with his trusty axe. Doc McCoy is a cold-blooded bounty hunter who works methodically with lures, knockout gas, poison syringes and a custom long-range pistol. Kate can fool almost any man with the right outfit and kills discreetly with her hidden gun, and Isabelle completes the team. THQ Nordic’s advice is to combine the team’s special skills to beat each challenge in your own style.
Showdown mode, choice and difficulty
Showdown mode lets you pause Desperados 3 at any moment to react to ambushes or surprise attacks, line up actions for several characters, then release them together. THQ Nordic promises countless ways past any obstacle: you choose between non-lethal and deadly attacks, quiet stealth or blazing guns, and you can defeat large groups of enemies with careful planning. Several difficulty settings and special replay challenges let you tune the game to your playstyle. THQ Nordic later added free Baron’s Challenges updates, while Money for the Vultures is a separate three-part DLC sold on its own and not on this disc.
Languages, rating and PS5
The PlayStation Store page for the PS4 game lists voices in English, German, Russian and Chinese, and screen text in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Korean and Simplified Chinese. Arabic is not listed for voice or text. The store lists language and violence as the content descriptors. The game is for one player, with DUALSHOCK 4 vibration support. On PS5 the disc can be played after a system software update, but PlayStation warns that some PS4 features may be missing.
Who Desperados 3 suits
Desperados 3 suits players who enjoy slow, careful planning: studying a guard’s routine, timing a distraction, then executing a plan with two or three characters at once. Fans of Mimimi’s Shadow Tactics or of the original Desperados games will feel at home, and so will anyone who likes a strong Western setting with a clear story. Because every level can be solved many ways and replay challenges are built in, there is plenty to return to after the credits.
Who This Is Not For
Desperados 3 rewards patience, scouting and repeated attempts, so it does not suit players who want fast action or open-world freedom. There is no multiplayer or co-op. Arabic voice and text are not listed, so you need to follow the story in English or another supported language. The content descriptors are language and violence, so it is for adults. The Money for the Vultures DLC is not on this disc.
