Description

The Last Guardian is Fumito Ueda’s follow-up to Shadow of the Colossus — a quiet, wordless story about a boy and Trico, a giant part-bird, part-mammal creature chained in a ruin. Developed by genDESIGN and SIE Japan Studio, The Last Guardian PS4 builds every puzzle and platforming section around trust rather than combat, letting the bond between the two characters carry the entire experience.

The Last Guardian: A Boy, a Chain, and Trico

A young boy wakes in a ruin beside Trico, a massive creature chained and wounded, afraid of humans after clear mistreatment. Freeing it becomes the boy’s first act, and from there the two must escape the crumbling ruins together, with almost no dialogue and no explicit tutorial — the story unfolds entirely through what you see Trico do and how it reacts to you.

Companionship as a Game Mechanic

Trico is not a simple following NPC. It has its own moods, hesitations, and occasional refusals, reacting believably rather than obeying commands instantly — you call out, gesture, and coax rather than issue orders, and the creature responds the way a genuinely wary, half-tamed animal might. That unpredictability was a deliberate design choice, and it is the single thing critics and players most remember about the game.

Climbing, Puzzles and Scale

Traversal blends careful platforming with environmental puzzles that usually require Trico’s size or abilities to solve — boosting the boy to unreachable ledges, breaking down obstacles, or clearing a path through danger. The scale of the architecture around Trico constantly reinforces just how enormous the creature is next to the small boy, a visual trick Ueda has used since Shadow of the Colossus to make the world feel genuinely vast, and it works just as well here as it did against that game’s towering stone giants.

From Fumito Ueda’s Team

Director Fumito Ueda previously created Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, both now considered landmark works in game design, and The Last Guardian spent a notoriously long development period before finally releasing in 2016. It shares the same minimalist storytelling philosophy: few words, no HUD clutter, and an emotional arc built almost entirely through the growing relationship between two characters.

FAQ – The Last Guardian

Does Trico always do what I ask?

Not immediately — Trico behaves like a real, occasionally stubborn animal rather than a perfectly obedient tool, which is intentional and central to the game’s emotional core.

Is there combat in The Last Guardian?

Very limited — the boy has no real weapons of his own, and most threats are handled by working with Trico rather than fighting directly.

How long does the story take to finish?

A full playthrough typically takes around 10 to 12 hours, depending on how much time you spend exploring each area and simply watching Trico react to its surroundings, which many players consider part of the point.

Do I need to have played Ico or Shadow of the Colossus first?

No — the games share themes and a director but not a connected story, so The Last Guardian works perfectly well as a first introduction to Ueda’s style.
