Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is a role-playing game developed by the French studio Sandfall Interactive and published by Kepler Interactive, released on 24 April 2025. This is the international standard edition on PS5 disc, with a PEGI 18 rating on the cover. You lead the members of Expedition 33 on a journey to destroy the Paintress so that she can never paint death again, and each of them has only one year left to live. The game blends turn-based combat with moments that call for real-time reactions, set in a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France.

The story: a last expedition against the Paintress
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 puts its story first. The Paintress is a mysterious being who paints death, and the members of Expedition 33 set out knowing they have one year to break the cycle she imposes. The official site names characters such as Gustave and Maelle, and the PlayStation Store description of the Deluxe Edition mentions six playable characters. The tone is sombre and grown-up, and the world is drawn in an art style inspired by late nineteenth-century France, so it suits players who enjoy long, moving stories more than quick matches.
Turn-based combat with real-time elements
The studio describes the game as a turn-based RPG with real-time elements. You pick attacks and skills calmly on your turn, as in classic role-playing games, but timing and quick reactions during the fight change the outcome. That mix makes Clair Obscur Expedition 33 a good fit for players who find traditional turn-based games too slow, while planning still matters for anyone who likes building a party and choosing skills. On PS5 it supports DualSense vibration, and the accessibility settings include an option to play without adaptive trigger effects.
Languages and Arabic subtitles
The PlayStation Store lists Arabic among the on-screen languages for this game, alongside English, French, German, Turkish, Japanese and others, for a total of 20 text languages. Voice acting comes in two languages only, English and French. In practice, you can follow dialogue and menus in Arabic text, while the voices stay in English or French. Because this is an international disc edition, some languages or improvements may arrive through game updates after installation, so connecting the console to the internet once to download the latest version is a good idea.
Music and art style
The soundtrack is composed by Lorien Testard and is a central part of the game’s identity and emotional pull. Footage of Clair Obscur Expedition 33 shows a world of dark colours and golden light, huge creatures of stone and crystal, and buildings hanging in the air, close to what its name suggests: clair-obscur is the painting term for light and shadow. Anyone who likes games with a strong artistic identity will find something different here from the usual Japanese role-playing games, even though the turn-based structure will feel familiar.
The international edition and offline play
This is the standard disc release for PS5, not the Deluxe or Collector’s Edition, so it does not include the extra outfits bundled with the Deluxe Edition. It is a single-player game, and the PlayStation Store lists offline play, so you do not need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play. It also supports Remote Play, letting you continue on another device at home. The disc works on PS5 consoles with a disc drive; the PS5 Digital Edition needs Sony’s separate disc drive before it can read it.
Who This Is Not For
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is not for anyone looking for multiplayer or co-op: it is single-player only. There is no Arabic voice acting; Arabic is available as on-screen text only. It is not for players under 18, according to the PEGI rating printed on the cover. If you do not enjoy turn-based combat or long, dialogue-heavy stories, a straightforward action game may suit you better. This standard edition does not include the Deluxe Edition content.
