Xiaomi describes the colour scheme as vibrant orange and mysterious black: the fabric body is black, with an orange strip along the top. An integrated handle folds out of the body for carrying to the beach, a picnic or a campsite.

Each end has what Xiaomi calls 3D colourful lighting — a time-tunnel style ambient light effect. Xiaomi notes that its product pictures only illustrate the effect and real results may vary. The lights look good at night, but they cost battery, which is why Xiaomi’s playtime figure is measured with them off.

Battery: 26 Hours Under Xiaomi’s Test Conditions

Inside is a 7.3 V, 5,200 mAh lithium-ion battery. Xiaomi quotes about 26 hours of playback, from its internal labs, at 50% volume with the lighting effects disabled and Bass Boost mode turned off. Turn up the volume, switch on the lights or use Bass Boost and the Xiaomi Sound Party will run for less; Xiaomi does not publish a figure for those settings.

Charging accepts 5 V 3 A, 9 V 2 A or 12 V 2 A, and a full charge takes about 4 hours on a 12 V 2 A charger. With that same charger, Xiaomi says a 10-minute top-up gives about 2 hours of playback under the same 50% volume, lights-off, Bass Boost-off conditions. The Xiaomi Sound Party connects over Bluetooth 5.4, with a transmission distance of 25 m in Xiaomi’s specifications. Two of them can be paired in TWS mode as a stereo set. Xiaomi points out that this mode is designed for music: with video, sound and picture may drift out of sync depending on your device or network.

Party Connect links up to 100 speakers for synchronised playback, with the caveat that real performance depends on Bluetooth conditions, nearby devices and the environment. For quick pairing, a built-in NFC module lets you tap an Android phone running Android 8.1 or later — the speaker must be on its BT input for NFC to work.

IP67, With Xiaomi’s Own Caveat

Xiaomi rates the Xiaomi Sound Party IP67, which in the IEC system means dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion. Xiaomi’s own footnote is more cautious: it calls the speaker not a professional waterproof speaker, offering basic splash-proof and dust-proof protection that copes with rain showers and splashes.

In practice that makes it fine by the pool, on the beach or out in the rain, but it is not something to take swimming or to leave sitting in water. Dry it off before charging.

Calls Through the Speaker

A built-in microphone lets you answer calls through the Xiaomi Sound Party, which is handy when your phone is across the room or charging. It is a convenience feature for a party speaker; Xiaomi does not publish microphone specifications such as noise reduction.

Who This Is Not For

Skip the Xiaomi Sound Party if you want something to slip into a bag pocket: at about 1.2 kg and 25.5 cm long it is a carry-by-the-handle speaker.
