Retractable radar for low beds and sofas
Most robot vacuums carry a fixed laser turret on top, which blocks them at the edge of a low bed or sofa. On the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 the dToF radar lowers automatically, and Xiaomi gives a minimum accessible height of 9.5cm. The robot skips these low areas while mapping and returns to them after the open floor. Suction, brushes and hair
Xiaomi rates the fan at 20,000Pa, measured on a fully charged unit, and says results vary with the test environment. The main brush is an anti-tangle design and the side brush extends outward for edges. Xiaomi reports a 99% hair pick-up rate under specific lab conditions: dry hair spread evenly, Vacuuming and Mopping in Standard mode, and the figure reached after two cleanings. For corners, Xiaomi quotes a 0mm side-brush distance to a built-in corner and 0mm mop distance to a straight wall with the Corners & edges focus on. Treat these as lab results rather than a promise for every floor.
Obstacle sensing and carpets
The Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 uses S-Cross structured light for low obstacles together with the retractable radar and an edge sensor. Xiaomi does not list a camera for this model and does not publish a list of recognised object types, so picking up cables, socks and small toys before a run is wise. An ultrasonic sensor detects carpets and lifts the mops by up to 15mm when the robot moves onto a rug. For long-pile carpets Xiaomi recommends the Carpet avoidance mode in the app, so the mops do not touch the rug at all.
The all-in-one dock
The dock empties the robot into a 2.5L dust bag. Xiaomi says one bag lasted over 75 days in its test home: 120m², a family of three, one pet and daily cleaning; your interval will depend on your floors. The mops are washed with hot water, which Xiaomi says reached above 80°C at the outlet in a 25°C room test, and then dried with hot air for about 2 hours. The clean water tank holds 4L and you refill it by hand; Xiaomi does not publish the dirty water tank capacity. The dock measures 470 × 360 × 572mm with the ramp extension fitted, or 260 × 360 × 572mm without it.
Battery, app and voice control
Xiaomi lists a 5,200mAh nominal battery (4,800mAh rated) and up to 140 minutes of continuous cleaning, measured from full charge in Vacuuming and Mopping, Standard mode; it does not publish runtimes for other modes. In the Xiaomi Home app you start cleaning remotely, set schedules and draw no-go zones, and the app needs Android 9.0 or iOS 12.0 or later. Xiaomi also lists Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, noting they require compatible devices and are not available in every language or country. A home with tiles, marble and a few rugs is where the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 fits best.
Who This Is Not For
The Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 is not for homes with loose cables and clutter on the floor that will not be tidied first, because Xiaomi lists structured light and lasers, not a camera. It is not for anyone who wants the dock plumbed into a water supply and drain: the 4L clean tank is refilled by hand. The dock is 572mm tall and up to 470mm deep with its ramp, so it needs a clear spot, and dust bags are a recurring cost.
