Description

The Xiaomi BW400 Pro is the outdoor camera that is meant to be installed once and then left alone. A 10,000mAh battery topped up by an integrated solar panel means no cable to run and, on Xiaomi’s figures, no recharging at all in normal use. It records at 2.5K from a 4MP sensor, sees 132 degrees, and carries an IP66 rating for dust and rain. We stock it in the UAE with a one-year Totot warranty.

Solar power on the Xiaomi BW400 Pro, and what 180 days really means

Xiaomi publishes a 10,000mAh Xiaomi BW400 Pro battery and 180 days of continuous operation with normal use, backed by solar cells rated at 20 percent conversion. Twenty percent is a genuinely good figure for a panel this size; most consumer solar accessories sit lower.

The phrase to read carefully is normal use. Every battery camera figure is quoted against an assumed number of daily events, and a camera watching a quiet side wall triggers far less than one watching a driveway where cars and people come and go all day. Treat 180 days as the best case and the solar panel as the thing that closes the gap when your real usage is heavier.

The other variable is sunlight, and here the UAE is close to ideal. A panel that struggles through a northern European winter has an easy job on a wall in Sharjah. Mount the Xiaomi BW400 Pro where the panel actually catches direct sun for part of the day and solar does the work; mount it under a deep soffit in permanent shade and you are back to recharging by hand.

Xiaomi BW400 Pro image quality: 2.5K, f/1.6 and a 1/2.7-inch sensor

The Xiaomi BW400 Pro records at 2.5K from a 4MP sensor measuring 1/2.7 of an inch, behind an f/1.6 lens. Sensor size is the specification most listings omit and the one that matters most outdoors, because a physically larger sensor gathers more light per pixel. At 1/2.7 inch this is a solidly mid-range sensor rather than the tiny ones in budget cameras.

The Xiaomi BW400 Pro field of view is 132 degrees, which Xiaomi breaks down as 113.3 degrees horizontal and 58.7 degrees vertical. That vertical figure is worth knowing before you mount it: a camera three metres up on a wall, angled down, will have the top of the frame filled with sky unless you tilt it properly. Plan the angle, not just the position.

What 2.5K will and will not do: it will tell you a person in a light shirt walked to your door and roughly what they were carrying. It will not reliably read a number plate at the end of a street. No camera at 132 degrees will.

Night vision and AI detection on the Xiaomi BW400 Pro

The Xiaomi BW400 Pro has two night modes. Infrared is the energy-efficient one and gives a black-and-white image that nobody standing in front of the camera can see. Full-colour night vision uses four LED supplement lights alongside two infrared beads and gives you colour, at the cost of announcing the camera with visible light.

Outdoors, colour at night earns its keep. The colour of a car or a jacket is often the only identifying detail in footage, and a black-and-white clip strips it out. Whether you want the lights visible is a judgement call about deterrence versus discretion, and the camera lets you make it.

Detection runs on the camera itself rather than in the cloud, using local algorithms for human recognition, animal detection, vehicle detection and package detection. On-device processing means alerts arrive quickly and keep working when your internet drops. Package detection is the quiet favourite for anyone who orders deliveries to a villa: an alert that says a package arrived beats one that says something moved.

Xiaomi also fits the Xiaomi BW400 Pro with an MJA1 security chipset with what it describes as financial-grade encryption. That is a hardware measure rather than a software promise, which is the distinction worth caring about on a camera pointed at your home.

Xiaomi BW400 Pro weatherproofing, audio and storage

The Xiaomi BW400 Pro is IP66, which covers complete dust protection and powerful water jets from any direction. For the UAE, the dust half of that rating matters more than the rain half most of the year, and it is the half cheaper cameras tend to fail on.

Xiaomi BW400 Pro two-way audio picks up voices from up to 8 metres, which is a generous figure for an outdoor microphone and means you can actually hold a conversation with somebody at a gate rather than shout at them. Outdoors, wind will always cut into that, so read 8 metres as a calm-day number.

Xiaomi BW400 Pro recordings go to a microSD card of up to 256GB or to cloud storage. The card is not listed in the box. For a camera that records around the clock, choose a card rated for video surveillance or endurance use rather than a standard one, because continuous writing is what kills ordinary cards.

The Xiaomi BW400 Pro also works with Google Assistant and Alexa, so a feed can be pulled up on a smart display by voice.

What Xiaomi does not publish about the Xiaomi BW400 Pro, and the word Set

We would rather be straight about the gaps than fill them. Xiaomi does not publish dimensions, weight, operating temperature, Wi-Fi standard or bands, or power input for this model on its specification page. Several listings quote those numbers anyway; we do not know where they came from, so we leave them out.

The package list Xiaomi publishes is short: main unit x1 and user manual x1. The solar panel on this model is part of the camera assembly rather than a separate accessory, which is why it does not appear as its own line. Xiaomi does not spell out what else, if anything, the word Set covers, so if mounting hardware is decisive for you, ask us before ordering and we will open a unit from stock and tell you exactly what is inside.

That is also why we will not tell you the Xiaomi BW400 Pro pans or tilts. Xiaomi publishes no pan or tilt specification for it, and we are treating that as a fixed camera until Xiaomi says otherwise.

Who the Xiaomi BW400 Pro is not for

Not for a spot in permanent shade. The whole economic case rests on the solar panel keeping the battery topped up. Under a deep soffit, in a covered car park or on a north-facing wall with no direct sun, you lose the feature you paid for.

Not for a very busy entrance if you expect the 180-day figure to hold. Heavy triggering drains any battery camera faster than the quoted number, and solar closes part of that gap rather than all of it.

Not for reading fine detail at distance. At 132 degrees and 2.5K, it identifies people and activity well and small print poorly.

Not for anyone who needs a camera that follows movement. Xiaomi publishes no pan or tilt for this model, so treat it as fixed and aim it carefully.

And not for indoor use, where a mains-powered indoor camera such as the C100 or C701 will cost less and do more.

Buying the Xiaomi BW400 Pro in the UAE

The combination of a 20 percent solar panel and the amount of sun this country gets is what makes this camera make sense here in a way it does not everywhere. Install it on a sunlit wall and the maintenance is close to zero.

We ship across the Emirates including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman from locally held stock, so delivery takes days rather than weeks. Units are genuine Xiaomi retail items in sealed packaging.

Warranty is one year from Totot against manufacturing defects. The Xiaomi BW400 Pro product title carries no TDRA registration, so no separate agent warranty applies to it, and we would rather say that plainly than let you assume coverage that does not exist. Our 14-day return policy covers defective or non-conforming items.

FAQ

Does the Xiaomi BW400 Pro need a cable?

No. It runs on a 10,000 mAh battery topped up by an integrated solar panel, so there is no mains cable to run to it.

Will the battery really last 180 days?

Under normal use, per Xiaomi. Heavy triggering on a busy driveway drains it faster, which is what the solar panel is there to offset. Mount it where the panel gets direct sun and recharging becomes rare.

Is the solar panel a separate accessory?

No. On this model the solar cells are part of the camera assembly, which is why Xiaomi lists the package simply as main unit and user manual.

What resolution is it?

2.5K, from a 4 MP sensor measuring 1/2.7 inch behind an f/1.6 lens.

Can it see in colour at night?

Yes. There is a full-colour night mode using four LED supplement lights, alongside an infrared mode that stays invisible. You choose which one runs.

Does it detect packages?

Yes. Xiaomi lists package detection alongside human, animal and vehicle detection, all processed on the camera rather than in the cloud.

Is a memory card included?

No. Xiaomi lists the package as main unit and user manual. The camera takes a microSD card up to 256 GB, and cloud storage is available separately.

Does it rotate?

Xiaomi publishes no pan or tilt specification for this model, so we treat it as a fixed camera. Aim it carefully when mounting.

Will it survive a UAE summer?

It is rated IP66, which is dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. Xiaomi does not publish an operating temperature range for this model, so we will not quote one.

Does it work with Alexa?

Yes. Xiaomi lists both Google Assistant and Alexa support.
