Towa and the Guardians Switch is the European physical edition of Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree, a roguelite action-adventure published by Bandai Namco Entertainment and developed by Brownies inc. It released worldwide on 19 September 2025. You play as Towa, a priestess of Shinju Village, who leads eight guardians against the evil Magatsu and his army, the Magaori. Every quest puts two guardians in the field, one with the sacred sword Tsurugi and one with the staff Kagura, in a hand-drawn world scored by composer Hitoshi Sakimoto.

A hand-drawn world under threat
The story is set in a far-off mystic realm. Shinju Village lives under the protection of a sacred tree, and Magatsu and the Magaori threaten its peace. Towa and her eight guardian companions set out to push the darkness back. Bandai Namco describes a 2D isometric view with hand-drawn characters and painterly backdrops in an Eastern style, and the music is by Hitoshi Sakimoto, a composer with a long record in Japanese role-playing games. The result is a calm, warm look that contrasts with fast combat.

Sword and staff: Tsurugi and Kagura
Combat in Towa and the Guardians Switch is built around a pair. For each quest you choose two of the eight guardians: one wields the sacred sword Tsurugi up close, while the other bears the magical staff Kagura and supports with magic. Bandai Namco says each guardian has unique abilities and a personal set of swords, so a pairing that suits one player can feel very different for another. Swapping pairs is the main way to change your approach when a dungeon gets difficult.

Roguelite runs and upgrades
As a roguelite, Towa and the Guardians Switch sends you into dungeons in repeated expeditions. You clear rooms, defeat Magatsu’s forces and push deeper, and each attempt teaches you more about enemy patterns and your chosen duo. Guardians’ skills are unlocked and upgraded in dungeons or by talking to villagers, and materials you gather can be used to forge and upgrade swords. Failing a run is part of the loop, but the upgrades you carry back keep each new run a little stronger.

Shinju Village through the years
Between expeditions in Towa and the Guardians Switch you return to Shinju Village, and the village itself changes over the years as the guardians pursue quests across different timelines. Nintendo’s listing says you can build bonds with residents, learn their customs and stories, train at the dojo, summon powerful Graces and craft new swords at the smithing shop. This village layer gives a sense of story and progress beyond simply finishing runs.

Co-op and play modes
Nintendo lists Towa and the Guardians Switch for 1–2 players on a single system and 1–2 players online. Online play and Save Data Cloud require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Each player needs a compatible controller, and Nintendo lists the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller as supported. The game runs in TV, tabletop and handheld modes, so a run on the sofa can continue on the go.
European edition and languages
This is the European physical release with PEGI labelling. Nintendo UK lists the languages as Japanese, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Korean and Chinese, and gives the digital version a download size of 6.0 GB; the game card holds the game itself. A Deluxe Edition exists as a separate product, and this box is the standard edition. Bandai Namco also released a free demo on consoles and PC on 18 August 2025, if you want to try the combat first.
Who This Is Not For
Towa and the Guardians Switch is rated PEGI 12 for bad language and violence, so it is not aimed at young children. Roguelite design means replaying dungeons many times and losing progress within a run when you fail; players who dislike repetition may find that tiring. Online co-op needs a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, and local co-op needs a second controller. Arabic is not among the listed languages.
