The Sony WH-1000XM5 Black is Sony’s 2022 flagship over-ear noise cancelling headphone in its most popular colour. Two processors, the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 and the Integrated Processor V1, control eight microphones, four on each earcup, and Sony’s Auto NC Optimizer adjusts the cancelling to how you wear them and to the surrounding environment, including air pressure. Sound comes from a 30 mm driver with a carbon fibre composite dome, with LDAC for high-resolution wireless audio. Noise cancelling built on two processors
On the Sony WH-1000XM5 Black, the QN1 chip handles noise cancelling while the V1 processor helps it control all eight microphones, which is why Sony describes the cancelling as working across a wider range of frequencies than earlier models. The Auto NC Optimizer runs automatically: it reacts to your hair, glasses and fit, and to atmospheric pressure, which is useful on long flights out of Dubai or Abu Dhabi. A dedicated button on the left earcup switches between noise cancelling and Ambient Sound, so you can hear an announcement without taking the headphones off.
A 30 mm driver with a carbon fibre dome
Inside the Sony WH-1000XM5 Black, Sony uses a newly designed 30 mm driver unit with a carbon fibre composite dome, which it says improves clarity in the high frequencies. The circuitry uses gold-containing lead-free solder and a Fine Sound Resistor. Over Bluetooth the headphones support SBC, AAC and LDAC; LDAC carries roughly three times more data than standard Bluetooth audio, according to Sony, but it needs an Android phone or another LDAC source. DSEE Extreme uses on-device AI to upscale compressed files in real time, and the headphones are 360 Reality Audio certified, with personalisation through ear-shape analysis in the app.
Calls with four beamforming microphones
For calls, Sony’s Precise Voice Pickup Technology combines four beamforming microphones with an AI-based noise reduction algorithm, which Sony says was trained on more than 500 million voice samples. A wind noise reduction structure helps outdoors. Multipoint lets the Sony WH-1000XM5 Black stay connected to two Bluetooth devices at once, such as a laptop for meetings and a phone for calls. Fast Pair helps Android users pair and locate the headphones, and Swift Pair speeds up pairing with Windows 10 and 11. Sony’s Middle East page lists hands-free “Hey Google” and Alexa support.
Smart listening features
Speak-to-Chat stops the music as soon as you start talking and resumes it afterwards, which is handy for a quick word with a colleague or a cashier. Adaptive Sound Control senses where you are and what you are doing and adjusts the ambient sound settings, learning places you visit often. A capacitive wearing sensor pauses playback when you take the headphones off. Playback and volume are controlled by swiping and tapping the touch panel on the right earcup. Settings, EQ and listening history live in Sony’s Sound Connect app.
Battery, charging and comfort
Sony rates the Sony WH-1000XM5 Black battery at up to 30 hours with NC on and 40 hours with NC off, and a full charge takes about 3.5 hours over USB-C. With an optional USB-PD compatible charger, 3 minutes of charging gives about 3 hours of playback. The headphones weigh about 250 g and use soft fit leather earpads with a stepless slider. The earcups swivel round to lie in the collapsible case rather than folding inward, so the case is wider than a folding headphone’s. The box includes the case, a 1.2 m headphone cable for wired listening and a USB cable.
Who This Is Not For
The Sony WH-1000XM5 Black is not for anyone who wants headphones that fold small: the earcups swivel but the headband does not fold, so the case takes more bag space. LDAC does not work with iPhone, which uses AAC. There is no IP rating for sweat or water, so they are not gym headphones. The USB-PD charger needed for the 3-minute quick charge is not included.
