The Sony WH-1000XM6 Black is the successor to the WH-1000XM5, launched by Sony in May 2025. Its HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 is, according to Sony, seven times faster than the processor in the previous model, and it tunes 12 microphones in real time, 1.5 times as many as the WH-1000XM5. Sony’s Adaptive NC Optimiser adjusts the cancelling to your surroundings automatically. The sound was developed with mastering engineers from Sterling Sound, Battery Studios and Coast Mastering, and the headphones fold again, a design the XM5 dropped. Sony rates the battery at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on.

QN3 and 12 microphones
The main upgrade in the Sony WH-1000XM6 Black is processing. Sony says the QN3 chip runs seven times faster than its predecessor and finetunes 12 microphones, compared with eight on the WH-1000XM5, with the Adaptive NC Optimiser reacting to the environment in real time. In practice that matters most with changing noise: a cabin on take-off, a metro carriage, an open-plan office where voices come and go. Ambient Sound mode lets outside sound in when you need it, and the noise cancelling can be paused instantly from the headphones themselves.
Sound tuned with mastering engineers
Sony developed the Sony WH-1000XM6 Black sound with engineers from three mastering studios: Sterling Sound, Battery Studios and Coast Mastering. The 30 mm driver uses a high-rigidity carbon fibre composite dome. Over Bluetooth 5.3 it supports SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3; LDAC needs an Android phone or another LDAC source, while LC3 is the codec behind LE Audio, which Sony says gives ultra-low latency for gaming. DSEE Extreme upscales compressed music in real time, and 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema turns stereo into a surround-style effect for films.
Calls with six AI beamforming microphones
For calls Sony uses an advanced six-microphone AI-based beamforming system that isolates your voice from background noise, so the person on the other end hears you rather than the traffic or the cafe. You can mute instantly from the headphones. Multipoint keeps two devices connected, and Auto Switch moves between them, for example from a laptop meeting to a phone call. Settings, EQ, Background Music Effect and Game EQ are in Sony’s Sound Connect app. These features make the Sony WH-1000XM6 Black a practical choice for remote work as well as music.
A folding design for travel
The WH-1000XM5 swivelled but did not fold; the XM6 brings folding back. Sony uses metal injection moulding for the folding mechanism, and the carrying case has a magnetic closure, so it opens with one hand at the gate. The headband is wider than before and finished in vegan leather for a lower-pressure fit, and the headphones weigh about 254 g. In the box are the carrying case, a 1.2 m connection cable for wired listening through the stereo mini jack, and a USB cable. Black is one of the three colours Sony announced at launch, with Platinum Silver and Midnight Blue.
Battery and quick charge
Sony rates the Sony WH-1000XM6 Black battery at up to 30 hours of music with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours with it off. A full charge takes about 3.5 hours over USB, and Sony says 3 minutes of charging gives up to 3 hours of playback, enough for a commute after forgetting to charge overnight. Sony does not include a wall charger. On long-haul flights from the UAE, the 30-hour figure comfortably covers a return trip to Europe with noise cancelling on, though high volume and LDAC use shorten it.
Who This Is Not For
The Sony WH-1000XM6 Black is not for anyone on a tight budget: it costs noticeably more than the WH-1000XM5, which still offers strong noise cancelling. LDAC does not work with iPhone, which uses AAC. Sony gives no water or sweat resistance rating, so it is not for workouts. At about 254 g it is slightly heavier than the XM5. No wall charger is included.
