Sony WF-1000XM6 Black is the discreet finish of Sony’s flagship noise cancelling earbuds: black buds and a black charging case that blend into the shadow of the ear and disappear into a pocket. Inside, it is the same hardware as the Platinum Silver model: the High-Resolution Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e working with the Integrated Processor V2, eight noise cancelling microphones (four on each earbud), a newly designed 8.4mm driver, and up to 8 hours of music per charge with noise cancelling on, or up to 24 hours with the case.

Who the black finish suits
Earbuds are worn in meetings, on the Metro and at the gym, so the finish decides how visible they are. Sony WF-1000XM6 Black reads as a plain, neutral earbud rather than an accessory: from the side it sits in the shadow of the ear, which helps if you take calls in an office or a formal setting where bright earbuds look out of place. It also matches almost any phone, laptop sleeve or work bag. The trade-off is pocket dust and lint, which show on a black case sooner than on silver, and fingerprints that appear on the touch surface under strong light until you wipe them. Neither affects sound or the seal. If you want earbuds to be noticed, look at the Platinum Silver; if you want them to go unnoticed, Sony WF-1000XM6 Black is the quieter choice.
Noise cancelling: QN3e and eight microphones
Sony moved from three microphones per earbud on the WF-1000XM5 to four on the Sony WF-1000XM6 Black: two feedback microphones plus two feedforward microphones on each side, eight in total. The new QN3e processor runs at about three times the processing speed of the previous model so it can control all of them, and Sony states about 25% more noise reduction than the WF-1000XM5, mainly in the mid and high frequencies heard on trains, planes and in cafés (Sony’s own measurement under IEC guidelines). The Integrated Processor V2 runs the Adaptive NC Optimiser, the rounded body shape and smooth microphone grilles reduce wind noise, and Noise Isolation earbud tips come in four sizes, XS to L, because a good seal is what the noise cancelling depends on.
Sound: 8.4mm driver, 32-bit processing and LDAC
The Sony WF-1000XM6 Black uses a dedicated 8.4mm driver that combines different materials for the dome and the edge, with a patent-pending notch shape in the edge to control high-frequency resonance. QN3e improves DAC performance and signal-to-noise ratio, and the Integrated Processor V2 supports 32-bit audio signal processing. Sony developed the tuning with four mastering engineers. Frequency response is 20Hz to 20,000Hz at 44.1kHz sampling, and 20Hz to 40,000Hz with LDAC at 96kHz and 990kbps. Codecs are SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 over Bluetooth 5.3 with a 10m maximum range. DSEE Extreme upscales compressed music to up to 96kHz/24-bit, and 360 Reality Audio with head tracking works with a compatible Android 13 or later phone.
Calls and connection in busy places
For calls, each earbud of the Sony WF-1000XM6 Black uses two microphones for beamforming toward your mouth plus a bone conduction sensor, and AI noise reduction separates your voice from wind, traffic and nearby conversations. Super Wideband calling is supported when your phone supports it, and a double tap on the earbud can mute the microphone once enabled in the Sound Connect app. Sony made the internal antenna about 1.5 times larger than on the WF-1000XM5 and moved it to a position the ear covers less, for a steadier link in crowded malls and airports. Multipoint keeps two devices connected at once, and the earbuds support LE Audio and Auracast broadcast audio.
Battery life by codec, from Sony’s help guide
Sony publishes per-codec playback times for the Sony WF-1000XM6 Black earbuds on a single charge. With noise cancelling or Ambient Sound on: up to 8 hours on AAC or SBC, 7 hours on LC3 and 5 hours on LDAC. With both off: up to 12 hours on AAC or SBC, 11 hours on LC3 and 8 hours on LDAC. Talk time is up to 5 hours with noise cancelling on and 5.5 hours with it off. The case holds two further charges, for up to 24 hours with noise cancelling on, or 36 hours with it off, measured on AAC with DSEE Extreme and the equaliser off. Five minutes of charging gives about 60 minutes of playback. The earbuds fill in about 1.5 hours, the case in about 2 hours over USB-C, and the case also charges on a Qi pad, sold separately.
Setup, fit and daily use
Each Sony WF-1000XM6 Black earbud weighs about 6.5g with the M tips, and the case about 47g. Install the Sony Sound Connect app to run the fit check, pick a tip size, choose the codec and set the 10-band equaliser, which replaces the 5-band one on the previous model. The app also offers Adaptive Sound Control, BGM Effect, Speak-to-Chat and a battery-care setting that stops the earbuds just short of 100%. Sony notes that equaliser, DSEE Extreme, Speak-to-Chat and Auto Ambient Sound shorten battery life. The earbuds are rated IPX4 against splashes and sweat; the case is not rated.
Who This Is Not For
Sony WF-1000XM6 Black is not for swimming or rinsing under a tap: IPX4 covers splashes and sweat on the earbuds only, and the case has no rating. It is not ideal if you need long LDAC sessions, because LDAC with noise cancelling drops playback to 5 hours. There is no wired listening option, Qi charging needs a pad you buy separately, LDAC works with compatible Android devices rather than iPhone, and the deep in-ear silicone seal may tire people who dislike in-ear pressure. If you want a bright colour, only Black and Platinum Silver exist.
