The JBL Sense Lite Black earbuds never go inside your ear canal. They hang on a soft hook behind each ear and aim the sound towards it with JBL OpenSound technology, so you hear your music and still hear traffic and the people talking to you. The black version has matte black hooks and a black case, the most neutral of the five Sense Lite colours. The earbuds play for up to 8 hours on a charge, the case adds another 24, and the IP54 rating protects them from sweat and dust.

How open-ear sound works
Each JBL Sense Lite Black earbud has an 18 × 11 mm dynamic driver that sits in front of the ear opening without touching the canal. The sound travels a short distance through the air, so the world around you stays audible in a natural way. Because an open design loses some bass by nature, JBL adds a bass-enhancement algorithm that adapts to the volume level. The result is balanced sound that suits podcasts and music on the move, but it does not give the isolation or the deep bass of earbuds that seal the ear. In the JBL Headphones app you can tune the JBL Sense Lite Black with a 10-band EQ and customise the touch controls.

Hooks that stay put
The hooks are made of soft liquid silicone around a flexible memory wire, so they take the shape of your ear and hold steady while you run or cycle. JBL lists the weight as 19 g for the pair of earbuds and 64.5 g for the case. With the ear canal left open, sweat does not build up inside it and there is none of the pressure that ear tips cause after a few hours. The IP54 rating means protection against dust and against splashes and sweat, which suits a morning run or a session at the gym, but not swimming or rinsing the earbuds under the tap.

Battery and quick charge
The JBL Sense Lite Black plays for up to 8 hours, or up to 5 hours of talk time, on one charge, and the case stores 24 more hours, for up to 32 in total. A full charge over USB-C takes about 2 hours, while 10 minutes of quick charging gives about 3 hours of playback, which helps when you find the battery empty just before heading out for a run. JBL notes that no charger is included, so use any USB-C adapter you already own. JBL does not mention wireless charging for the case.

Calls and two devices at once
Each earbud has two beamforming microphones, four in total, that focus on your voice and reduce the sound around you. The JBL Sense Lite Black connects over Bluetooth 5.4 and can stay linked to two devices at once, for example your phone and your laptop, switching to the phone when a call comes in. Google Fast Pair speeds up pairing on Android, and Dual Connect lets you use either earbud on its own or both together. Calls on a busy street are still a little harder than with sealed earbuds, because your ears stay open to the noise.

Why black
Black is the safe choice if you wear the JBL Sense Lite Black in several places: the gym in the morning, the office at noon and a walk in the evening. The black hooks blend in with dark hair and black-framed glasses, and sweat and dust do not show the way they can on white or beige. It is also the most discreet option for work meetings and video calls. Matte black silicone can show dried salt after a long workout in the heat, so wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it before putting the earbuds back in the case.

Who This Is Not For
The JBL Sense Lite Black is not for anyone who wants to shut out noise on a plane or the metro: there is no noise cancelling, and the design is open on purpose. Bass lovers will find sealed in-ear earbuds stronger. In very quiet rooms, someone sitting next to you may hear some of the sound at high volume. The hooks can be uncomfortable with thick-framed glasses or a tight helmet. No charger is included, and IP54 does not allow swimming.
