Description

The ASTRO A50 X is Logitech G’s flagship console headset, and this is the white version. What separates it from every other wireless gaming headset is the base station: it carries HDMI 2.1, so your Xbox Series X|S and your PS5 feed their video through it on the way to the television, and a single tap on the earcup moves the sound and the picture together. Your PC or Mac joins over USB-C. Three systems stay connected, and nothing gets unplugged.

What the ASTRO A50 X Is, and What This Listing Used to Say

This page was previously published with a title describing a Gen 4 headset in black and silver, for PS5, PS4, PC and Mac, marked as an end-of-life model. That description was wrong on every count, and we have corrected it rather than leave it standing.

The product in these photographs is the ASTRO A50 X in white. You can see it in Logitech’s own product imagery in the gallery: the G HUB screenshot names the connected device A50 X, and the feature callouts list graphene drivers and Dolby Atmos compatibility. The ASTRO A50 Gen 4 is a different and older headset, built on ASTRO Audio V2 drivers rather than graphene, rated by Logitech at 15+ hours, with no PLAYSYNC and no HDMI switching. This is not that headset.

Two further corrections. Logitech’s compatibility list for the ASTRO A50 X is Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC or Mac. PlayStation 4 is not on it. And the headset is not discontinued: Logitech G currently lists it for sale on its own store.

PLAYSYNC and HDMI 2.1: Switching the Picture, Not Just the Sound

Logitech’s own line on the ASTRO A50 X is blunt: connect to Xbox, PS5 and PC or Mac at once and tap through all three systems. The consoles go into the base station over HDMI 2.1 and the base station feeds one HDMI cable to your television. The PC or Mac connects over USB-C.

Logitech’s PLAYSYNC technology page draws the distinction with the rest of the range precisely: PLAYSYNC on the ASTRO A50 X supports audio switching on console and PC and video switching on console, which the company describes as suited to a 4K gaming television. The cheaper ASTRO A50 Gen 5 gets PLAYSYNC AUDIO, which moves sound only.

Logitech specifies 4K 120 Hz passthrough on both Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. In practice this means one input on the television does the work of three, and you stop navigating the TV’s input menu every time you change machine. It is a genuinely unusual feature, and it is the main reason the ASTRO A50 X costs what it does.

Drivers, Spatial Audio and the Microphone

The ASTRO A50 X uses PRO-G GRAPHENE drivers, which Logitech describes as delivering clarity, detail, and spatial and timing accuracy. Graphene is used for the diaphragm because it is both stiff and light, which tends to reduce flex at higher volumes.

Spatial audio is handled differently on each platform, and it is worth being exact about it. Logitech lists Dolby Atmos on Xbox and PC, and PlayStation 5 3D Audio on the PS5. Those are two different technologies from two different companies; the headset supports whichever one the connected system provides. Windows Sonic is also supported on PC and Mac.

Game and chat mixing works across the connected platforms, and the ASTRO A50 X is configured through Logitech’s G HUB software on desktop and mobile. Logitech does not publish a detailed microphone specification for this model in a form we can verify, so the numbers you may see quoted elsewhere are not repeated here.

The Base Station, Battery and Range

The base station is a magnetic charging cradle as well as a switch. The ASTRO A50 X sits on it between sessions and charges on contact, and the base carries an LED status panel that shows remaining battery and which system is currently selected. Logitech notes the LED brightness is adjustable in G HUB.

Logitech states a 24-hour battery life for the ASTRO A50 X. What Logitech does not state, on any page we can reach, is the listening level that figure is measured at. Battery ratings for headsets are volume-dependent, so treat 24 hours as a manufacturer figure at an unstated volume rather than a promise about how you personally listen.

Wireless range is published: Logitech specifies up to 472.4 inches, which is 12 metres. That is a line-of-sight figure from the manufacturer, and walls and other 2.4 GHz traffic will reduce it.

ASTRO A50 X Against the Rest of the A50 Range

There are three ASTRO A50 products in circulation and the names are close enough to cause expensive mistakes, so here is the short version.

The ASTRO A50 Gen 4 is the oldest. ASTRO Audio V2 drivers, a rated 15+ hours, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 and PC or Mac, an HDMI adapter needed for PS5, and no platform switching. The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is current, uses graphene drivers and PLAYSYNC AUDIO, and switches sound between three systems over USB-C but does not touch your video. The ASTRO A50 X is the flagship: graphene drivers, PLAYSYNC with HDMI 2.1, and video switching on console.

A fourth name exists only in listings, not in Logitech’s catalogue. There is no Logitech product called the A50 Omni. That word comes from the phrase omni-platform in marketing copy, and it has been mistaken for a model name across the market. If a shop offers you an A50 Omni, ask which of the three real models they actually hold.

What Logitech Does Not Publish

We would rather mark a gap than fill it with a guess. For the ASTRO A50 X, Logitech does not publish the listening level behind the 24-hour battery figure, the charge time, the driver diameter in millimetres, the frequency response range, the headset weight, or a detailed microphone specification.

Logitech also does not publish a full in-the-box list in a form we could verify, beyond the headset and the base station themselves. If the exact contents matter to you, ask us before ordering and we will open the carton we hold and tell you what is in it.

Colours: this unit is white. Logitech has sold the ASTRO A50 X in black and in a Mars Red finish as well, and a McLaren Racing Edition exists as a separate product. Those are different items and not what is on this page.

Who This Is Not For

If you own a PlayStation 4, this is the wrong headset. Logitech’s compatibility list for the ASTRO A50 X covers Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC or Mac, and PS4 is not on it.

If your consoles already run through an AV receiver or a soundbar, the base station wants to sit in that same signal path and you may end up with two boxes arguing over the same HDMI chain. Work out where it goes before you buy, not after.

If you only own one console, you are paying a large premium for switching hardware you will never use. The video switching is the expensive part of the ASTRO A50 X, and with one machine it does nothing for you.

If you want a headset for travel or for the office, look elsewhere. The base station needs mains power and it is the heart of the product; away from it you lose the switching entirely. There is also no active noise cancellation here, only the passive isolation of closed earcups, so it is a poor choice for a noisy commute.

FAQ

Does the ASTRO A50 X work with a PlayStation 4?

No. Logitech’s compatibility list for this model is Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC or Mac. PS4 is not included, despite what an earlier version of this listing claimed.

Does it really switch the video on my TV as well as the audio?

Yes, on consoles. Logitech states that PLAYSYNC on the ASTRO A50 X supports audio switching on console and PC and video switching on console, with 4K 120 Hz HDMI 2.1 passthrough on Xbox Series X|S and PS5.

How long does the battery last?

24 hours, per Logitech. Logitech does not publish the listening level that figure is measured at, so it should be read as a manufacturer rating at an unstated volume rather than a guarantee.

How many systems can stay connected at once?

3. Two consoles over HDMI 2.1 and a PC or Mac over USB-C, all live at the same time, switched by tapping the headset.

Is this the same as the ASTRO A50 Gen 5, or the A50 Omni?

No. The Gen 5 is a cheaper model whose PLAYSYNC AUDIO moves sound only and leaves your video cables alone. The A50 Omni is not a Logitech product name at all; it comes from the marketing phrase omni-platform.

What is the wireless range?

12 metres, which Logitech publishes as 472.4 inches. That is a line-of-sight figure, so walls and other 2.4 GHz devices will cut it down.

What warranty do I get?

1 year from Totot, covering manufacturing defects. Returns are open for 14 days if the item is defective or does not match its description, and transit damage should be reported within 48 hours of delivery.
