The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is the white version of the headset Logitech G announced on 17 September 2024 as the fifth generation of the ASTRO A50 line. It pairs a wireless headset with a base station that acts as both a charging cradle and a switch box: you leave three systems connected to the base station over USB-C, and you move the sound between them by tapping a button on the headset itself. Logitech’s own name for the product is ASTRO A50 (Gen 5), and the feature that defines it is called PLAYSYNC AUDIO.

What the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 Is
This is an open-back wireless gaming headset sold together with a base station, in white. Open back is Logitech’s own description in the specification sheet, and it is worth registering early because it shapes who this headset suits. The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 sits between two other current ASTRO products, and the difference between them is worth understanding before you buy, because the names are close enough to cause mistakes.
Logitech G describes the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 as a LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming headset and base station with PLAYSYNC AUDIO. The base station is the part that does the work: it holds the headset when you are not wearing it and charges it through a magnetic contact, and it carries three USB-C device inputs plus a USB-C power input.
One naming point, because it causes real confusion in the market: Logitech does not sell a product called the A50 Omni. The names Logitech actually uses are ASTRO A50 (Gen 4), ASTRO A50 (Gen 5) and ASTRO A50 X. Listings that say Omni are using the phrase omni-platform from marketing copy as though it were a model name. The headset on this page is the Gen 5, and Logitech’s model numbers for it are A00186 for the headset and A00187 for the base station.
PLAYSYNC AUDIO: Three Systems, One Button
PLAYSYNC AUDIO is the reason to choose the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 over a cheaper wireless headset. Logitech G’s description is direct: you can connect up to three of your gaming platforms simultaneously, and then you simply tap the PLAYSYNC button on the headset to switch between up to three gaming systems.
The practical version of that is: your PS5, your Xbox Series X and your PC stay plugged into the base station over USB-C permanently. The base station has exactly three USB-C device inputs, which is where the limit of three comes from. Nothing gets unplugged, no dongle gets moved, no re-pairing happens. You press a button on the earcup and the sound follows you to the next machine. On the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 this is audio only.
Logitech’s specification sheet lists the platforms the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 supports as Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13 and later, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X|S and PlayStation 4 and 5. Note that PS4 and Xbox One are included there, which is more generous than the marketing pages suggest. If you own four machines, one of them is still getting unplugged.
40 mm PRO-G GRAPHENE Drivers and the Audio Formats
The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 uses 40 mm PRO-G GRAPHENE drivers with a published frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Logitech’s description of the design is that the graphene diaphragm is suspended so it can move more freely, which is what the company calls a live edge design. Graphene is stiff and light, which in a headphone driver tends to mean less flexing of the diaphragm at higher volumes.
Logitech’s own product material for this headset states the audio formats plainly, and they are not the same on every platform. PC audio runs at 24 bit / 48 kHz. Console audio runs at 16 bit / 48 kHz. The microphone runs at 16 bit / 48 kHz. Logitech also describes the wireless link as pro-grade 24-bit LIGHTSPEED delivering uncompressed gaming audio.
That split matters if you were expecting the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 to sound identical on console and on PC. It will not, and that is a limit of what the consoles pass over USB audio rather than a fault in the headset. Onboard, Logitech specifies a 7-core DSP handling the processing, and the G HUB software exposes a parametric EQ, sidetone, noise reduction and a stream mix output.
Battery, Charging, Range and Bluetooth
Logitech rates the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 battery at up to 24 hours at 78 dB. That dB figure is the condition the rating is measured at, and it matters: 78 dB is a moderate listening level, so if you habitually run the volume higher you will see less than 24 hours. Charge time is approximately 3 hours, the battery is a lithium rechargeable cell, and the headset’s own USB-C port is for charging only rather than for audio.
The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 base station is a charging dock as well as a switch. The headset drops onto it between sessions and charges through the contact, which is the part most owners end up appreciating most: a headset that lives on a dock is a headset that is charged when you want it. Logitech publishes a wireless range of 15 metres for both the headset and the base station, which is a manufacturer figure and will drop through walls and in congested 2.4 GHz environments.
Bluetooth on the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is Bluetooth 5.0 with LE, used for mixing, so you can bring phone audio or a chat app in alongside the game sound coming from the base station. The base station runs from a dedicated USB-C power adapter rated 100 to 240 V input and 5 V DC at 2 A output.
The Microphone, Controls and Weight
The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 uses a flip-to-mute boom microphone: you physically rotate it up to mute, which is the most reliable mute there is because you can see its state without looking at software. Logitech specifies it as omnidirectional, sampling at up to 16 bit / 48 kHz, with a microphone frequency response of 60 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
Controls on the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 earcup cover volume and game-to-voice balance, with multifunction controls handling PLAYSYNC switching and Bluetooth. There is a multi-coloured status indicator on the headset and LED status indicators on the front panel of the base station, and the headset is marked for left and right.
On weight and size, Logitech publishes the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 headset at 375 g and its base station at 305 g. The headset measures 91.5 mm high by 185.8 mm wide by 184.9 mm deep; the base station is 40 mm by 123.4 mm by 147.7 mm. Logitech also gives an operating range of 0 to 40 degrees Celsius at up to 90 percent humidity.
ASTRO A50 Gen 5 Compared With the ASTRO A50 X
These two products are frequently confused, and Logitech G draws the line itself on its PLAYSYNC technology page: PLAYSYNC on A50 X supports audio switching on console/PC and video switching on console, described as perfect for a 4K gaming TV, while PLAYSYNC AUDIO on A50 (Gen 5) is streamlined for audio switching, described as perfect for battlestation setups.
In plain terms: the A50 X base station carries HDMI 2.1 and passes your console video through it, so one HDMI cable to the TV covers all your machines and switching the headset switches the picture too. The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 base station does not do that. Its three inputs are all USB-C and it moves audio only. Your video cables stay exactly where they are.
Which one is right depends entirely on your setup. If all three machines feed one television and you are tired of the TV input menu, the A50 X solves a problem this headset does not. If your machines already sit at one desk with their own displays, or you use a monitor with its own input switching, you are paying for HDMI hardware you will never use. The ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is the cheaper and more sensible answer for that second case.
Who This Is Not For
If you need isolation, look elsewhere. Logitech lists the design of the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 as open back, which means sound leaks out toward people near you and ambient noise leaks in. There is also no active noise cancellation. Open back generally buys you a more spacious sound stage, and it costs you privacy and quiet, so it is a poor fit for a shared room, an office or any noisy environment.
If you only own one console and have no intention of buying another, the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 is hard to justify: the switching hardware is the bulk of what you are paying for and you will never use it. A single-platform wireless headset will give you comparable sound for noticeably less money.
If you want one HDMI cable to your television and the picture to follow the headset, this is the wrong model in the range. That is the ASTRO A50 X. Buying the Gen 5 and expecting video switching will disappoint you.
If you need a headset that travels, this is not it. The base station is the product, and it needs its own mains adapter. Away from it you are on Bluetooth, and you are carrying a 375 g over-ear headset with no folding hinge and a dock you cannot take with you. And if you are shopping purely on endurance, read the battery rating with its condition attached: up to 24 hours at 78 dB, which is a moderate volume, not a loud one.

FAQ
How long does the battery last?
Up to 24 hours at 78 dB, which is the condition Logitech states the rating at. 78 dB is a moderate listening level, so expect less than 24 hours if you normally listen louder. Charge time is approximately 3 hours.
Is the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 open back or closed back?
Open back. Logitech lists the design as open back in its specification sheet, so the headset leaks sound outward and lets ambient noise in, and there is no active noise cancellation.
Does the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 switch video as well as audio?
No. Logitech states that PLAYSYNC AUDIO on the A50 Gen 5 is streamlined for audio switching only. Video switching over HDMI 2.1 is a feature of the ASTRO A50 X, a different and more expensive model.
How many systems can I connect to the base station at once?
3. The base station has exactly three USB-C device inputs, plus a separate USB-C power input, and you tap the button on the headset to move between them.
What size are the drivers, and what is the Bluetooth version?
40 mm PRO-G GRAPHENE drivers, with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, and Bluetooth 5.0 + LE for mixing alongside the LIGHTSPEED wireless link.
Is this the same thing as the A50 Omni I have seen advertised?
No, because Logitech does not make a product called the A50 Omni. That name comes from the phrase omni-platform in marketing copy. Logitech’s actual model names are ASTRO A50 (Gen 4), ASTRO A50 (Gen 5) and ASTRO A50 X. This page is the Gen 5.
Does the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 work with a PS4 or an Xbox One?
Yes. Logitech’s specification sheet lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One X|S, along with Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 13 and later.
How heavy is it?
375 g for the ASTRO A50 Gen 5 headset and 305 g for the base station, as published by Logitech.
