The Story Behind Like a Dragon Gaiden PS4
Kazuma Kiryu was once a legend of the yakuza world. To protect his family, he gave up his name and let the world believe he was dead. SEGA’s official site explains that he now works as an agent for the Daidoji Faction under the codename Joryu. A routine job to stop an illegal gold smuggling operation at the Port of Yokohama goes wrong when a mysterious group appears and seems to recognise him, pulling him back into the underworld he left behind.
The tagline on PlayStation’s page sums up the tone: erase your past to protect your future. The game sits between Yakuza 6 and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth in Kiryu’s story, which makes it an important chapter for fans of the series.
Yakuza and Agent Fighting Styles
Combat in Like a Dragon Gaiden PS4 is real-time brawling, and you can switch between two styles at any moment. Yakuza style is aggressive and based on raw strength, the kind of street fighting Kiryu is famous for. Agent style is faster and more precise, built around gadgets such as electrified wires that bind and stun enemies. SEGA also lists Charge Attacks, Heat Actions, an Extreme Heat Mode and the Ultimate Counter among the battle systems.
Mixing both styles in one fight is the key: crowd control with gadgets, then heavy Yakuza hits to finish.
Sotenbori, Yokohama and Side Activities
The main setting of Like a Dragon Gaiden PS4 is Sotenbori in Osaka, with a return to Isezaki Ijincho in Yokohama. Both are dense city districts full of shops, side stories and distractions. SEGA’s official list of activities includes the Castle coliseum, a live-action cabaret club, Pocket Circuit racing, karaoke with a new song, a boutique, an arcade with Master System titles, darts and substories.
An informant called Akame offers extra requests while you explore, and these build up toward a larger showdown. The side content is one of the reasons many players stay in these streets long after the main plot.
Free PS5 Upgrade: How It Works with Like a Dragon Gaiden PS4
The box mentions a free PS5 digital upgrade, and SEGA and PlayStation publish the conditions clearly. If you own the PS4 disc, you can get the PS5 digital version at no extra cost. The PlayStation Store states that disc owners must insert the PS4 disc into the PS5 every time they want to download or play the PS5 version. Owners of a PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive are not eligible for the free upgrade.
In practice this disc suits two kinds of buyers: PS4 owners who want to play now, and PS5 owners with a disc drive who want the PS5 version through the upgrade path. The PS5 version adds DualSense vibration, according to the PlayStation Store.
Languages, Players and Extras
For Like a Dragon Gaiden PS4, the PlayStation Store lists English and Japanese voices, and on-screen text in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Japanese, Korean and both forms of Chinese. SEGA’s own site notes that the English voice track arrived through a post-launch patch, so an update may be needed to hear it. The game is for one player and supports offline play.
The PlayStation Store also states that a Special Trial Version of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth unlocks after you finish the story. The Legendary Fighter Pack, with Goro Majima, Taiga Saejima and Daigo Dojima, is a separate paid add-on.
Who This Is Not For
Like a Dragon Gaiden PS4 is a PEGI 18 game with descriptors for violence, language, gambling and in-game purchases, so it is for adults only. Like a Dragon Gaiden PS4 is a single-player game with no co-op campaign. If you own a PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive, you cannot use this disc or claim the free PS5 version. Players new to the series should know the story leans on past events in Kiryu’s life. Arabic text is not offered. Some English voice content depends on downloading the patch SEGA mentions.
