Sony WF-1000XM5 Black is the black colourway of Sony’s XM5-generation noise cancelling earbuds, alongside Platinum Silver and Smoky Pink. Sony made each earbud about 25% smaller in volume than the WF-1000XM4 and cut the weight from 7.3 g to about 5.9 g, while adding a second processor for noise cancelling. You get the 8.4 mm Dynamic Driver X, LDAC, Bluetooth 5.3 with multipoint, and up to 8 hours of music per charge with noise cancelling on, or up to 24 hours with the case.

Why black
Black is the colour for people who want earbuds to stay out of sight. The Sony WF-1000XM5 Black buds sit low in the ear, and a dark finish keeps them less visible from the side in meetings, on the Metro or on video calls. The black case also hides scuffs from keys and pocket wear better than the lighter Platinum Silver or Smoky Pink. The glossy surface does show fingerprints, so a dry microfibre cloth now and then keeps it clean. Inside, the three colours are identical, so the choice is purely about how visible you want them to be.
Noise cancelling: QN2e, V2 and six microphones
Sony pairs the High-Resolution Noise Cancelling Processor QN2e with the Integrated Processor V2, which optimises noise cancelling in real time. With Multi Noise Sensor technology each earbud carries three noise cancelling microphones (dual feedback plus feedforward), six in total, and Sony states about 20% more noise reduction than the WF-1000XM4. The Sony WF-1000XM5 Black also uses a wind-noise-reducing structure and Sony’s Noise Isolation earbud tips, made of polyurethane foam reshaped from the XM4 for less pressure, in four sizes: SS, S, M and L.
Sound: Dynamic Driver X and LDAC
The 8.4 mm Dynamic Driver X combines different materials for the dome and the edge, which Sony says improves reproduction from low to high frequencies and also helps generate the anti-phase sound that noise cancelling relies on. Codecs are SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3. Sony lists 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz at 44.1 kHz sampling, and 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz with LDAC at 96 kHz and 990 kbps. DSEE Extreme upscales compressed music. LDAC works with compatible Android devices; iPhones use AAC.
Battery life by codec
Sony’s Help Guide gives Sony WF-1000XM5 Black playback per charge. With noise cancelling or Ambient Sound on: up to 8 hours on AAC or SBC, 7 hours on LC3, 5 hours on LDAC. With both off: up to 12, 11 and 8 hours. Talk time is up to 6 hours with noise cancelling on and 7 hours off. With two further charges from the case, Sony quotes up to 24 hours with noise cancelling on and 36 hours off, measured on AAC with DSEE Extreme and the equaliser off. Three minutes of charging gives about 60 minutes of music. The equaliser, DSEE Extreme and Speak-to-Chat shorten these times.
Case, charging and water resistance
The Sony WF-1000XM5 Black case weighs about 39 g and charges over USB-C or on a Qi-standard wireless charger, placed with the SONY logo facing up; a Qi pad is not included. Full charging of the earbuds takes about 1.5 hours, and the earbuds and case together about 2 hours. Sony asks for a USB adaptor that supplies at least 0.5 A. The earbuds are rated IPX4 equivalent against splashes and sweat; that is not protection for swimming or rinsing.
Calls and two devices at once
For calls, the Sony WF-1000XM5 Black combine Sony’s Precise Voice Pickup technology, bone conduction sensors and an AI algorithm trained on more than 500 million samples to separate your voice from surrounding noise. Multipoint keeps them connected to two devices regardless of operating system, so you can listen on a phone during the commute and take a laptop meeting at the desk without re-pairing. Bluetooth 5.3 reaches about 10 m in line of sight.
Who This Is Not For
The Sony WF-1000XM5 Black are not ideal if you need LDAC with noise cancelling for a long flight: that combination gives up to 5 hours per charge. The foam ear tips wear with use and need replacing over time. IPX4 is not enough for swimming or rinsing. No power adapter or Qi pad is included, and the cable in the box is a short USB-A to USB-C cable. If you want the newest generation, the WF-1000XM6 is a separate, newer model.
