The HORI Racing Wheel Apex is an entry-level, Sony-licensed wheel-and-pedal set for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Windows PCs. You get a roughly 280 mm wheel, a full-size pedal unit, paddle shifters and a desk clamp, at a price far below motorised wheels. One point matters more than any other before you buy: HORI lists force feedback and vibration as unsupported. The HORI Racing Wheel Apex reads your steering and pedal inputs, but no motor pushes back against your hands. For kart games, arcade racers, younger players and first-time wheel users that is often fine; for serious sim racing it is a real limit.

No force feedback: what you actually feel
HORI’s own SPF-004 page lists force feedback and vibration among the features the wheel does not support. Force-feedback and direct-drive wheels use a motor to resist your steering, so you sense grip loss, kerbs and weight transfer through the rim. On the HORI Racing Wheel Apex the rim turns against a centring spring rather than a motor, so the car’s behaviour comes to you through the screen and sound, not through your hands. The upside is a quiet, light, simple set with no power brick and nothing to calibrate beyond the app settings. The downside is that lap times and immersion in simulation titles will not match a force-feedback wheel. If you already know you want to feel the road, skip this model.
PS5 support depends on the game
The wheel is officially licensed by Sony and HORI recommends PS5 system software 21.02-04.03.00 or later and PS4 system software 4.73 or later. Support on PS5 is decided game by game: HORI publishes a compatibility list for the HORI Racing Wheel Apex that marks each title for its two PS5 modes, Normal mode and Steering mode. Some games work in only one mode, some need the D-pad reassigned for camera or menu actions, and features tied to the DualSense touchpad, such as map screens, may not be reachable from the wheel. HORI’s list includes Gran Turismo 7, the F1 series and Forza Horizon 5. Check your main game on that list before ordering.
PC use: XInput games only
On Windows, HORI lists Windows 11 or 10 with a USB Type-A port and an internet connection for setup. HORI also states that only XInput games are supported on PC; DirectInput titles are not. Many modern PC racers accept XInput devices, but several dedicated simulators expect DirectInput wheels with force feedback, and those will not see the HORI Racing Wheel Apex correctly. If PC sim racing is your main goal, confirm that your game accepts XInput input before you buy. For casual PC racing and arcade titles it works as a plug-in USB wheel without extra power.
Rotation, wheel and pedals
HORI rates the turn radius at about 270 degrees, and Sony’s official PlayStation store listing notes that you can switch between 270 and 180 degrees on the fly. The 180-degree setting makes steering quicker for kart and arcade games, while 270 degrees gives finer control in simulation titles. Either way it is far short of the 900 degrees of high-end wheels, so hand-over-hand steering is not part of the experience. HORI gives the wheel diameter as about 280 mm, the steering unit as about 280 × 275 × 268 mm and 1,400 g with a cable of about 3 m, and the pedal unit as about 234 × 305 × 150 mm and 900 g with a cable of about 1.5 m. Paddle shifters sit behind the rim; there is no clutch pedal.
Mounting and the HORI Device Manager app
The HORI Racing Wheel Apex clamps to a desk or table, and HORI also supplies four suction cups for smoother surfaces. In the box you get the steering unit, the pedals, a clamp, a clamp shaft, four suction cups and a quick start guide. The HORI Device Manager app is used to update firmware, assign buttons, adjust the dead zone and pedal sensitivity, and save up to four custom profiles to switch between, according to Sony’s official PlayStation listing. The wheel is wired only, so it needs to sit within cable reach of the console or PC USB port.
Who This Is Not For
Sim racers who want to feel the road through the rim: HORI lists no force feedback and no vibration. PC players whose simulator only accepts DirectInput wheels, since HORI supports XInput games only on PC. Players whose main PS5 game is missing from HORI’s compatibility list, or who rely on DualSense touchpad, motion-sensor or headset-jack features, which the wheel does not support. Xbox owners, and anyone wanting 900-degree rotation, a clutch pedal or wireless use.
