The GoPro HERO9 Black is the camera where GoPro added a front colour display, so you can frame yourself while you film. GoPro lists video at 5K30, 4K60, 2.7K120, 1440p120 and 1080p240, 20MP photos, a 1.4-inch front display, a 2.27-inch rear touch display, HyperSmooth 3.0 stabilization with in-camera horizon leveling, and a body waterproof to 10 m (33 ft) with no housing. It launched in 2020 and has since been followed by newer HERO models, so the GoPro HERO9 Black makes most sense as an affordable first GoPro or as a second camera for extra angles.

5K video and 20MP photos
GoPro says the HERO9 Black uses a new image sensor that records 5K at 30 frames per second and 4K at 60, with 2.7K and 1440p at up to 120fps and 1080p at up to 240fps for slow motion. Photos are 20MP, with SuperPhoto plus HDR, RAW photos and Night Lapse video also listed. Shooting 5K is useful even if you publish in 4K: the larger frame leaves room to crop, straighten or reframe a shot in editing and still export a clean 4K file. GoPro does not publish the sensor size for this model, so we do not quote one. As with any small-sensor action camera, footage is at its best in daylight; dusk and indoor scenes show more noise.
Front colour screen and rear touch display
The headline change on the GoPro HERO9 Black is the 1.4-inch front colour display with a live preview, which GoPro introduced on this model. Before it, filming yourself on a GoPro meant guessing where the frame was; now you can see it while you talk, ride or walk. The front screen can also show status information instead of the preview. The rear display grew to 2.27 inches and is a touch screen with touch zoom, which makes settings and playback easier to handle with wet or cold fingers than tiny buttons. For vlogging, travel diaries and family videos, the two screens remove most of the guesswork.
HyperSmooth 3.0 and horizon leveling
Stabilization on the GoPro HERO9 Black is electronic: HyperSmooth 3.0, with horizon leveling now processed in the camera. It keeps running, cycling and handheld walking shots steady and the horizon straight within the camera’s limits, without a separate gimbal. Electronic stabilization works by cropping into the frame, so stronger settings narrow the field of view slightly. GoPro’s optional Max Lens Mod, sold separately, adds Max HyperSmooth and Max SuperView at up to 2.7K60 and horizon lock even when the camera rotates a full 360 degrees, for mountain bikers and anyone filming fast, rough action.
Battery, cold weather and waterproofing
GoPro says the HERO9 Black battery gives 30% more battery life than HERO8 Black, with better performance in cold weather. The removable battery is GoPro’s 1720mAh lithium-ion pack, the same rechargeable battery GoPro lists for HERO10 Black, so spares are easy to find. Real runtime depends heavily on resolution and frame rate, and 5K or high-frame-rate modes drain it faster, which is why a spare battery is usually the first accessory owners add. The body is waterproof to 10 m (33 ft) without a housing, and the lens cover is removable and replaceable if it gets scratched on rocks or sand.
Mounting, streaming and Power Tools
Folding mounting fingers are built into the base of the GoPro HERO9 Black, so it attaches directly to standard GoPro mounts, helmets, chest harnesses and handlebar clamps without a frame. GoPro lists 1080p live streaming and a 1080p webcam mode, plus TimeWarp 3.0 with Real Speed and Half Speed for smooth moving timelapses. The Power Tools set adds HindSight, which saves footage from before you press record, LiveBurst, Scheduled Capture and Duration Capture. It works with GoPro’s Max Lens Mod, Media Mod, Display Mod and Light Mod, all sold separately.
Who This Is Not For
The GoPro HERO9 Black is not for someone who wants the latest GoPro. It is a 2020 model, and newer HERO cameras add higher frame rates at top resolution, stronger stabilization and other features GoPro introduced later. Low-light footage is weak, as on any small-sensor action camera. The waterproof rating is 10 m, so scuba diving deeper needs a protective housing, sold separately. Media Mod, Max Lens Mod and the other mods are extras, and a fast microSD card is required for high-bitrate recording but is not included.
