The Gears of War E-Day Xbox Controller is Microsoft’s official Xbox Wireless Controller in the Gears of War: E-Day Limited Edition design, with a release date of 30 September 2026, a week before the game itself.
Its body is moulded and laser-etched to look like cracked asphalt with red cracks glowing through, the Crimson Omen sits in the centre, and the triggers, D-pad and X button are transparent red. Inside it is the standard Xbox Wireless Controller: Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth, a Share button, a 3.5 mm headset jack and AA batteries rated for up to 40 hours.

The design: an E-hole in your hands
Microsoft describes the look as the ground torn open by an erupting E-hole, the tunnels the Locust use to surface in Gears of War. The front has 3D-moulded, laser-etched texture of broken asphalt, so the cracks are something you feel under your palms as well as see, and red lines run through them as if lit from below.
The Crimson Omen, the red skull symbol of the series, is printed in the centre. The ABXY buttons are blacked out apart from a transparent red X, the left thumbstick is black and the right one red, and the Xbox button is crimson. On the back, the battery door carries printed COG tags, a detail most people only notice when they change the batteries.

Grip and controls for long sessions
The back and side grips are black, rubberised and have a leather-like texture, which helps in a warm room when hands start to sweat during a long Horde match. The transparent red triggers and D-pad are the same parts found on every current Xbox Wireless Controller in shape and travel; only the colour and finish change. The Share button in the centre captures a screenshot or a clip on Xbox, and buttons can be remapped in the Xbox Accessories app on console or Windows.
What it works with
The Gears of War E-Day Xbox Controller connects to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Xbox One over Xbox Wireless, and to Windows 10 and 11 PCs, Android phones and iOS devices over Bluetooth. That makes it suitable for Xbox Cloud Gaming on a phone, a TV or a PC as well as for the console. The 3.5 mm jack takes any wired headset, and USB-C allows a wired connection to a PC. Microsoft lists AA batteries in the box and rates them at up to 40 hours of play, depending on use.

Who This Is Not For
It has no built-in rechargeable battery: it runs on AA cells, so for recharging you need a Play and Charge Kit or rechargeable AA batteries, sold separately. It is a standard controller, not an Elite model, so there are no back paddles, adjustable-tension thumbsticks or trigger stops. It does not work on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch. And if you want the Luke Preece skull-and-Lancers artwork, that is the separate Xbox Design Lab version, which is ordered and customised from Microsoft and is not this boxed edition.
