The Valve Steam Controller is Valve’s new controller for PC gaming, released on 4 May 2026 at US$99. It combines a standard gamepad layout with two square haptic trackpads, full-size magnetic (TMR) thumbsticks with capacitive touch, gyro aiming switched on by Grip Sense, and four buttons on the back. A small magnetic Puck acts as both the 2.4GHz wireless receiver and the charging stand, and Valve rates the 8.39 Wh battery at 35+ hours of gameplay.

Trackpads and magnetic thumbsticks
The two 34.5 mm square trackpads are what set the Valve Steam Controller apart from an Xbox or PlayStation pad. They are pressure-sensitive with configurable click strength and have their own haptic motors, so strategy games, mouse-driven menus and older PC titles that were never designed for a controller become playable from the sofa. The thumbsticks are full-size and use TMR magnetic sensors, a non-contact design meant to avoid the drift that worn potentiometer sticks develop, and they sense your thumb through capacitive touch.
Grip Sense and gyro aiming
Valve added two capacitive areas along the back of the handles. With Grip Sense, holding the handles turns on the 6-axis gyro and releasing them turns it off, so you can aim in a shooter by moving the controller and re-centre simply by relaxing your grip. The four assignable grip buttons on the back can be mapped to anything in Steam Input, from jump and reload to keyboard shortcuts.
The Puck: wireless receiver and charger
The Steam Controller Puck plugs into a PC over USB-C and handles the 2.4GHz wireless link, which Valve measures at about 8 ms end to end with a 4 ms polling rate at 5 metres. One Puck supports up to four controllers. It also charges the controller: the controller snaps onto it magnetically. If you prefer, the controller also connects over Bluetooth (4.2 minimum, 5.0 or later recommended) or by USB-C cable, and it pairs with a Steam Machine without the Puck.
Where it works
Valve says the Steam Controller works with any PC or device running Steam or the Steam Link app: Windows, Mac and Linux computers, Steam Deck (docked or handheld), Steam Machine, and tablets and phones through Steam Link. On macOS, some Steam games that rely on Apple’s Game Controller framework do not support it, according to Valve.
Who This Is Not For
Valve lists Steam and Steam Link devices; it does not list PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch consoles, so it is not a console controller. Its best features, the trackpads, gyro and back buttons, depend on Steam Input, so outside Steam it behaves like a basic controller at best. Some Mac games are not compatible. At 292 grams it is a large, full-size controller. And stock is limited: Valve sells it through a reservation queue, and in June 2026 it estimated that new orders would ship in 2027.
