The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 – Core is Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 controller sold without the accessory kit, here in white with black grips. This Elite Wireless Controller Core White has the adjustable-tension thumbsticks, hair-trigger locks and wrap-around rubberized grip of the Elite Series 2, and it connects to Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and phones. What it leaves out is the box of extras: no charging dock, no paddles, no spare thumbsticks and no carrying case.

Table of Contents
What the Elite Wireless Controller Core White Includes, and What It Leaves Out
Microsoft lists three items in the Core box: the controller, a 9-foot (about 2.7 m) USB-C cable and the thumbstick adjustment tool. The controller comes fitted with standard thumbsticks and the standard D-pad.
Compared with the full Elite Series 2, the Core omits the charging dock, the paddles, the extra thumbsticks (classic, dome and tall), the alternative D-pad and the carrying case. Microsoft sells these separately as the Xbox Elite Series 2 Complete Component Pack, so you can start with the Elite Wireless Controller Core White and add the kit later if you find you want it.
Thumbstick Tension and Hair-Trigger Locks
The feature that sets the Elite apart from a standard Xbox pad is adjustable thumbstick tension. With the included tool you can set each stick to one of three tension settings, stiffer for fine aiming or lighter for quick movement, and the Xbox Accessories app lets you tune sensitivity curves.
Both triggers have hair-trigger locks that shorten their travel, so a shot registers with less pull. That helps in shooters; in racing games you will usually leave the locks off to keep the full analogue range of the Elite Wireless Controller Core White triggers.
Paddles, Button Mapping and Profiles
The back of the controller has four paddle positions. In the Xbox Accessories app you can assign A, B, X and Y, the D-pad directions, both bumpers, both triggers, the thumbstick clicks and the four paddles. On the Core you need to buy paddles first, in the Complete Component Pack, before the rear slots do anything.
Microsoft says the Elite Wireless Controller Core White keeps three custom profiles. Mapping and profile setup in the app are only available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11, not on phones.
Battery Life and Charging
Microsoft rates the internal rechargeable battery at up to 40 hours per charge and adds that battery life varies with usage and other factors, so treat 40 hours as a best case rather than a promise. The battery is built in; there are no AA cells to swap.
With the Elite Wireless Controller Core White you charge through the included USB-C cable, which also works as a wired connection. The charging dock that ships with the full Elite Series 2 is not in this box.
Connections: Xbox, PC and Mobile
The Elite Wireless Controller Core White connects to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles with Xbox Wireless, and to Windows PCs, tablets, Android and iOS devices over Bluetooth. The 9-foot USB-C cable gives a wired link to consoles and PCs. Microsoft notes that Windows 7 and 8.1 are supported by cable only, with limited functionality.
That range makes one Elite controller workable across an Xbox in the living room, a gaming PC and cloud play on a phone.
Why White
The white shell with black rubberized grips is the Core’s signature look, and it sits naturally next to a white Xbox Series S. The grips where your palms rest are dark, so they do not show wear as readily; the white face and buttons of the Elite Wireless Controller Core White may need an occasional wipe with a slightly damp cloth.
Who This Is Not For
PlayStation and Nintendo players: the Elite Wireless Controller Core White is an Xbox controller and does not work with those consoles. Anyone who wants paddles, spare thumbsticks and a dock from day one, since the full Elite Series 2 includes them in the box. Casual or racing players who will never touch stick tension or trigger locks, who may be happier with the standard Xbox Wireless Controller. And Windows 7/8.1 users, who get cable-only, limited support.
