The Insta360 Luna Ultra is a pocket gimbal camera with two lenses on a 3-axis mechanical gimbal. Insta360 lists a 1-inch 8K main sensor behind a Leica Summicron f/1.8 lens, a 1/1.3-inch telephoto camera at 60mm equivalent, zoom up to 15x (6x lossless), a detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen and 47GB of built-in storage. It is made for vlogging, travel, concerts and portraits, not for underwater or 360-degree video.
Table of Contents
Two cameras: 1-inch 8K and telephoto
The main camera uses a 1-inch sensor with a Leica Summicron lens at f/1.8 and 20mm equivalent, and Insta360 lists 14 stops of dynamic range. The telephoto camera uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor at f/2.0 and 60mm equivalent, with a minimum focus distance of 15cm for close-up shots.
Together they cover six focal lengths, with zoom up to 15x (300mm equivalent) and 6x (120mm) lossless zoom, according to Insta360. The separately sold Ultra Telephoto Lens extends this to a 450mm equivalent in Stage Mode.
Video and photo
The Insta360 Luna Ultra records 8K at up to 30fps, 4K at up to 120fps, 1080p at up to 240fps and 4K30 vertical video, in H.265 at up to 120Mbps. Colour options include Standard, Dolby Vision and 10-bit I-Log for grading. PureVideo low-light mode runs at up to 4K60.
Photos go up to 37MP in UltraPhoto mode, with JPG or RAW, plus a 200MP scenic panorama mode and Live Frame photos. Leica colour profiles are built in.
Gimbal, tracking and screen
The 3-axis mechanical gimbal has a controllable pan range of −57° to 235° and tilt of −57° to 120°, with angular vibration of ±0.005°. Deep Track 5.0 AI tracking keeps a chosen subject centred, with group tracking and active zoom tracking.
The 2-inch OLED touchscreen detaches from the camera and works as a remote monitor up to 20 metres away in Insta360’s open-space test. It has its own microphone and a 210mAh battery.
Battery, storage and audio
The main gimbal has a 1550mAh battery. Insta360 rates it at 240 minutes of run time when recording 1080p24 with the screen and Wi-Fi off, so 4K or 8K recording will run shorter. It charges to 80% in 23 minutes with a 45W PD 3.0 PPS charger, which is not in the standard bundle.
Storage is 47GB built in, plus a microSD slot for cards up to 2TB. There are 4 microphones (3 on the gimbal, 1 on the screen) and a pre-installed wind guard, and the Insta360 Luna Ultra connects directly to two Insta360 Mic Air or Mic Pro transmitters.
Size, weight and connections
The Insta360 Luna Ultra measures 52.4 × 169.9 × 38.5mm. Insta360 lists 233g for Cosmic Black and 235g for Stellar White. It has a USB-C 3.0 port, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth, and works with the Insta360 app on iPhones with an A14 chip or newer and Android phones with a Snapdragon 855 or newer chip.
Who the Insta360 Luna Ultra is not for
It is not for underwater or rain use: Insta360 does not list a water resistance rating, and the old claim that this camera is waterproof was wrong. It is not a 360-degree video camera: the 360 panorama mode is for photos at 1x only. It is not for use in heat above 40°C, because Insta360 lists an operating range of 0–40°C, which matters in a UAE summer outdoors.
For a lighter single-lens model, Insta360 also makes the Luna Pro at 215g.
What is in the box
Insta360’s standard bundle contains the Insta360 Luna Ultra with the wind guard, a protective cover, a 1/4-inch thread handle and a wrist strap. The Ultra Telephoto Lens, sliding case, ND filters, battery handle and fill light are sold separately. Message us and we will check the colour of this unit in the warehouse.
